General Surgery Residency Program
Program Director's Welcome
Thank you for your interest in the General Surgery Residency Program at Memorial Healthcare System. The residency program provides a unique opportunity for highly motivated individuals who want to become well trained general surgeons. Accredited as a five year training program by the Surgical Residency Review Committee (S-RRC) and graduating six (6) categorical residents annually.
At the completion of their training, residents will have the clinical judgement, knowledge, and skills required to be confident and competent upon entering general surgical practice, pursuing further fellowship training and becoming Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery. We expect our graduating residents to average over 1250 cases and exceed operative requirements in all important categories.
The residency program combines many surgical divisions into one framework with the commitment to providing the best in patient care. Our diverse teams of surgeons work closely with one another to treat patients with a variety of surgical conditions using the latest medical and surgical innovations, while teaching residents the many facets of surgery. This collaboration of disciplines allows us to provide an array of conventional and unique surgical services in South Florida resulting in outstanding patient outcomes.

About Our General Surgery Residency Program
- We are a Community-Based University Affiliated Program. The program is sponsored by the Memorial Healthcare System. The System trains hundreds of medical students each year and is affiliated with Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Florida International University (FIU), and Nova Southeastern University.
- Large operative volumes (over 18,000 surgical procedures/year), a highly diverse and challenging surgical pathology in general surgery and its core sub-specialties, provide residents with an intense experience in patient care and complex surgical decision making.
- As part of our network of teaching facilities, there is a dedicated children’s hospital as well as a State and American College of Surgeons Designated Level I Trauma Center.
- Many of our surgical units are designated Centers of Excellence by a variety of surgical organizations as a reflection of the quality of surgical care and outcomes.
- In-house attending physicians and properly trained mid-level providers are available for assistance at all time so residents are not required to perform clerical tasks allowing for a better educational experience.
- Overnight call is limited only to those services where there is a corresponding learning experience.
- A great patient diversity reflects the demographics of South Florida.
- A challenging and exciting range of surgical pathology which rivals any larger medical center in the nation.
- The size of our program guarantees trainees to meet the surgical volumes and technical complexity expected by the American College of Surgeons and the American Board of Surgery. Furthermore, provides a learning environment rich with camaraderie and an ability to develop one-on-one relationships with fellow residents, faculty and mentors.
- Our technologically advanced clinical and simulation facilities will expose residents to cutting-edge surgical care using the latest diagnostic and therapeutic tools.
- We have an Office of Human Research with its own IRB that will assist residents with the development of their research projects. Participation in some form of research and other scholar activities is mandatory for graduation from the program.
- Residents will be trained in the basic concepts of QI and Patient Safety and will have the opportunity to participate in QI projects during their training.
- Advanced clinical, diagnostic and simulation facilities. Our program entails 3 teaching hospitals (Memorial Hospital West, Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital).
- An $18 million, 66,000 sq. ft., three story Simulation Center at Broward College will help to train residents in the most advanced simulation techniques. Advanced Robotics, Laparoscopy and Endoscopy simulations skills.
