Emergency Medicine Residency

More than half of the residency curriculum occurs directly in the Emergency Department (ED) and its associated rotations. A relatively large percentage of our institution’s initial critical care occurs in the ED and residents experience multiple off-service rotations in critical care. As a result, our residents are highly proficient with critically ill patients and critical procedures.

Our academic schedule is divided into three 13-block sections:

ED Orientation
EM first-years are introduced to the emergency department with a combination of didactics, simulation training, ultrasound basics and a limited number of clinical shifts.

Adult Emergency Department – Memorial West
Memorial West Hospital Emergency Department is a bustling community emergency department with over 95,000 patients annually. This department averages approximately 38% admission rate and an estimated 4-5% ICU admission rate. This Level 2 Trauma Center is also a Comprehensive Stroke and STEMI Center and a tertiary care unit.

Adult Emergency Medicine – Memorial Regional

Memorial Regional Hospital is a booming Level 1 Trauma, Comprehensive Stroke and STEMI Center within Broward County. This hospital sees over 90,000 patients a year and in 2022 had an over 40% admission rate! This emergency department was the first within Florida to receive the Resuscitative Excellence Award!

Pediatric Emergency Department – Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital
Joe DiMaggio Children's Emergency Department sees approximately 80,000 patients per year and is staffed year-round by board-certified pediatric emergency medicine fellowship trained physician. Residents have two dedicated pediatric ED blocks during their first year. In the second and third year, residents have a longitudinal experience, with four shifts every block in the pediatric ED.

Anesthesia

During first year, residents spend 3 weeks working alongside board-certified anesthesiologists to solidify their airway skills. Residents perform numerous intubations a day and learn about airway management under an anesthesiologist’s guidance.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

During first year, residents spend 3 weeks fully immersed as a core member of an emergency response team. Residents report to local fire stations and attend all emergency calls to learn and better understand prehospital care. This rotation is one of everyone’s favorites!

Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)

During first and second year, EM residents work alongside internal medicine residents, pulmonary critical care fellows and board-certified intensivists in the MICU. With the diverse pathology that presents and the tremendously high acuity of our ICU patients, it is highly regarded as one of the best rotations in this residency.

Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)
Second-year residents spend 1 block at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Intensive Care unit working with pediatric intensivists and critical care specialists. This affords the opportunity to care for children with severe cardiac, pulmonary and metabolic disease.

Obstetrics
As part of the labor and deliver team, the resident assists in deliveries and hones skills with transvaginal ultrasound at labor and delivery (L&D) triage.

Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU)
Residents acquire trauma center exposure and experience in all three years at Memorial Regional Level 1 Trauma Center and Memorial West Level 2 Trauma Center. As second-year residents, they work as part of the trauma team on the wards, help in running trauma codes, and perform life-saving procedures.

Ultrasound
During first and second year, residents have dedicated time scanning in the emergency department. In addition, EM residents receive dedicated POCUS training in all three years of training while on shift focusing on higher-level ultrasound topics to build confidence in ultrasound skills as training progresses.

Senior Elective
Ultrasound, EMS, sports medicine, ICU, and medical education are among a few of the elective options available for senior residents. With enough preplanning, a number of possibilities exist. Seniors have the opportunity to focus their training on clinical, administrative, teaching or research interests.

Memorial Healthcare System Emergency Medicine Residency Program

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) Specialty Track is designed for residents who wish to deepen their expertise in the care of acutely ill and injured children. Residents on this track will spend additional time in the Pediatric Emergency Department, working closely with the Pediatric Emergency Medicine education team to develop clinical excellence.

This track offers a comprehensive and immersive experience, making it ideal for residents with a strong interest in pursuing a fellowship or career in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.

Memorial Healthcare System Emergency Medicine Residency Program

The Research Specialty Track is tailored for residents who wish to delve deeper into academic Emergency Medicine while fulfilling and surpassing the requirements of the Resident Academic Research Project. Under the direct supervision and mentorship of the Research Director, residents on this track will gain advanced research skills and experience.

Key Opportunities:

• Curriculum Development and Teaching: Assist with the development and teaching of the Research-specific didactic curriculum.
• Journal Club Facilitation: Lead discussions during Journal Club, focusing on research methodologies and findings.
• Project Update Meetings: Attend monthly Research Director project update meetings and office hours to track progress and receive guidance.
• Observation Opportunities: Observe the operations of key research-related departments, such as the Office of Human Research, Division of Biostatistics, Institutional Review Board (IRB), or specific grant review committees.

Residents in this track are also encouraged to engage with the broader research community:

• Conference Attendance: Participate in regional and national conferences, presenting findings and networking with professionals in the field.
• Professional Committee Involvement: Serve on professional committees or as a reviewer for an Emergency Medicine journal.

The Research Specialty Track offers an advanced didactic curriculum that covers:

• Research Methodology and Study Design
• Epidemiology and Health Services Research
• Informatics and Decision Analysis
• Biostatistics and Data Analysis
• Ethics and Regulatory Oversight

Additionally, residents will receive individualized guidance in preparing and submitting grant award applications. This track is highly recommended for those interested in applying for an Emergency Medicine Research Fellowship following graduation.

Memorial Healthcare System Emergency Medicine Residency Program

The Ultrasound Specialty Track offers residents an in-depth exploration of emergency ultrasound, providing the opportunity to master advanced ultrasound applications and enhance their skills under the guidance of the Ultrasound Director. This track is ideal for residents who wish to develop a high level of proficiency in ultrasound, with a particular focus on areas such as:

• Advanced Echocardiography: Including acute vs. chronic right heart strain, diastology, and Velocity Time Integral (VTI) measurements.
• Pediatric Ultrasound: Specialized ultrasound applications in pediatric care.
• Advanced Procedural Skills: Mastery of advanced ultrasound-guided procedures.
• Core Ultrasound Skills: Continuous practice and refinement of basic and core ultrasound techniques.

Residents will engage in hands-on scanning at both Memorial Regional and West Hospitals, allowing for comprehensive learning and practical experience. Additionally, they will present an ultrasound-specific journal article during Journal Club and an ultrasound case during didactics, further solidifying their understanding of the material.

As senior residents progress through the track, they will take on teaching roles, mentoring junior residents and medical students during their ultrasound rotations. A new component of this track includes performing video reviews using the Synchronicity archiving system and assisting in providing quality assurance and improvement for various ultrasounds conducted across both emergency departments.

For senior residents who demonstrate proficiency and excel in this specialty track, opportunities to teach at national ultrasound workshops, such as those in San Diego, are available. This track is highly recommended for those interested in pursuing an ultrasound fellowship.

Memorial Healthcare System Emergency Medicine Residency Program

The Critical Care Specialty Track is intended for residents who desire a more intense focus on Critical Care within the broader field of Emergency Medicine. It enables the intertwining of clinical practice, education, and research to advance expertise, skills, and knowledge in Critical Care medicine. This track is especially designed for residents interested in pursuing a Critical Care fellowship post-residency. It is based on the premise that proficiency in Critical Care requires a strong foundation in Emergency Medicine.

Key Modules

1. Clinical Rotations

• ICU Rotations (MICU/SICU/PICU): Time spent in intensive care units to gain experience in managing critically ill patients.
• Emergency Medicine: Continued practice in the Emergency Department to maintain and hone skills in acute patient management.
• Elective Rotations: Opportunities to explore subspecialties or areas of interest within Critical Care, such as neuro-critical care.

2. Educational Opportunities

• Didactic Sessions: Attend monthly scheduled lectures on EM-Critical Care.
• Lecture: Opportunity to teach co-residents on a Critical Care topic at Didactics.
• Simulation Training: Additional sessions arranged biannually with a Critical Care focus.
• Asynchronous Learning: EM-ICU specific subscriptions to blogs and podcasts, such as EMCrit and CCPEM.

3. Research and Scholarly Activity

• Research Projects: Participation in research related to Critical Care medicine.
• National Conferences: Presenting at national conferences related to Critical Care.
• Local Conferences: Attendance at local hospital ICU grand rounds and M&M.

4. Fellowship Application

• Critical Care Clinical Rotations: Schedule and complete rotations in MICU, SICU, and PICU early in residency to ensure that Letters of Recommendation can be obtained timely.
• Electives: Schedule electives early in the second year to increase clinical ICU exposure beyond the standard EM-ICU curriculum.

Memorial Healthcare System Emergency Medicine Residency Program

The EMS Specialty Track offers residents a unique opportunity to delve into the fundamental aspects of out-of-hospital care delivered by EMS clinicians. Through this track, residents will rotate with two prominent agencies: Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue (PPFR) and Hollywood Fire Rescue and Beach Safety (HFRBS).

For those interested in specializing in EMS, the program extends additional exposure to the multifaceted role of an EMS physician, covering areas such as Medical Direction, Education, and Administration. Residents will also have the opportunity to explore various subspecialties, including disaster medicine, hazardous materials, tactical medicine, and event medicine, depending on availability.

Residents will have the opportunity to:

• Participate in and Coordinate Disaster Drills: Gain hands-on experience by organizing and executing disaster drills for the residency program and the hospital system.
• Engage in EMS-Focused Research: Contribute to research initiatives specifically targeting the EMS field.
• Provide Educational Sessions: Offer training and educational sessions to EMS clinicians, including lifeguards and paramedics.
• Attend Annual EMS Conferences: Participate in key events such as the "First There, First Care" conference and the "Gathering of Eagles."

Additionally, residents will acquire valuable experience in the administrative aspects of a medical director role. This includes involvement in quality and assurance (Q&A) meetings, protocol development, and participation in county and state EMS meetings. This comprehensive exposure is designed to prepare residents for an EMS fellowship or a career as a medical director. Moreover, residents will receive mentorship to help them secure an EMS fellowship position.

Memorial Healthcare System Emergency Medicine Residency Program

The Administrative Leadership Specialty Track is designed for residents who are passionate about developing leadership skills and pursuing a career in healthcare administration. This track offers a comprehensive, hands-on experience that equips residents with the knowledge and tools necessary to excel in administrative roles within the healthcare system.

Track Highlights:

• Mentorship and Leadership Pairing: Residents interested in administration and leadership will be paired with seasoned administrative leaders within the district. This mentorship will provide invaluable insights into the complexities of healthcare management and offer personalized guidance tailored to each resident’s career goals.
• Administrative Meeting Participation: Residents will have the opportunity to attend high-level administrative meetings, including those focused on quality improvement, operations, and strategic planning. This exposure will help them understand the intricacies of healthcare administration and develop the skills required to lead in this environment.
• Leadership Skill Development: Throughout the track, residents will take on leadership roles and engage in mentorship activities. • Didactic Integration: In addition to practical experiences, residents will collaborate with the residency’s didactic team to optimize and implement best practices in medical administration, ensuring they contribute to the enhancement of the program's operational framework.
• Career Advancement Preparation: The track includes mentorship focused on career advancement, with a strong emphasis on preparing residents for leadership roles within healthcare organizations. This includes guidance on navigating the complexities of healthcare management and positioning oneself for future opportunities in administration.

This specialty track offers a robust, hands-on, and impactful experience, preparing residents to become effective leaders in healthcare administration, equipped with the skills necessary to lead and innovate within complex healthcare systems.

Established in 1992, Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital is one of the region’s leading pediatric hospitals, offering a comprehensive scope of healthcare services and programs well beyond those offered by other facilities and is the only Pediatric Trauma Center in South Broward County.

The Broward College Health Sciences Simulation Center (HSSC) is a three story, 66,000 sq. ft. learning facility designed to mirror an acute care hospital. HSSC provides realistic experiences, using the latest medical simulation technology, for future health care providers, entry level health science professionals and current community decision makers by allowing them to experience real life situations within a safe learning environment through team collaboration.

Our proximity to Memorial's Cancer Institute brings in complex oncology cases, while our location in a tourist hotspot exposes us to rare diseases from Latin America and frequent water-related injuries.
