Shoulder Replacement
Our surgeons perform all types of shoulder replacement surgery. This procedure can help relieve shoulder pain that gets in the way of daily activities.
For severe shoulder pain, non-surgical therapies may not be enough to bring relief. If you’ve tried medication, injections, and physical therapy and are still in pain, you might benefit from shoulder replacement surgery.
Also known as shoulder arthroplasty, shoulder replacement surgery is not just for athletes needing to return to play. The procedure is becoming increasingly common and more effective for anyone experiencing shoulder pain. We use shoulder replacement surgery to treat arthritis, severe rotator cuff tears, and shoulder fractures.
Our orthopedic surgeons use innovative surgical methods to provide long-lasting shoulder joint replacements. Using computer navigation, CT scans, and fluoroscopy (live X-rays), we can map precise placement for implants. In addition, pre-operative images allow us to customize surgical instruments specific to your anatomy. This accuracy results in more natural movement and helps shoulder replacement implants last longer.
We work with you to individualize your shoulder replacement surgery. Our advanced techniques enable us to perform these procedures as same-day surgery. You’ll be able to go home to begin your recovery within hours of leaving the operating room.
After shoulder replacement surgery, we refer you to our Total Joint Replacement Recovery Program. Exercise physiologists oversee your recovery and create an individualized care plan. You have supervised group or private exercise sessions that focus on rebuilding strength and improving shoulder mobility.

Carmen's Shoulder Replacement
Carmen, a hairdresser, lived for years with worsening shoulder pain. It got so bad she couldn’t lift her arms.
Our Shoulder Replacement Options
During this procedure, we replace the ball and socket of the shoulder joint. This type of surgery is typically used to treat a shoulder joint damaged by arthritis, but with no tears in the rotator cuff.
This procedure is also called hemiarthroplasty. We use this technique when the shoulder socket and rotator cuff are healthy, but the ball of the shoulder joint needs to be replaced. It can treat arthritis in the shoulder joint or a severe fracture of the upper arm bone (humerus).
In a reverse shoulder replacement, the placement of the implanted ball and socket is reversed. We typically use this surgery as an option for people with severe rotator cuff tears, arthritis with rotator cuff damage, or a failed prior shoulder replacement. A reverse shoulder replacement allows other muscles to lift your arm.
Older adults are more prone to fractures in the ball of the shoulder joint, especially resulting from a fall. We fast-track geriatric fracture patients from the emergency department to the operating room as soon as possible. Getting in and out of surgery as quickly as possible means fewer complications and a faster recovery.
If you’ve had a previous shoulder replacement that needs to be revised, we can help. Shoulder implants can loosen from the bone, or you might experience stiffness, infection, or a fracture around the implant. Our joint replacement surgeons are highly skilled in performing challenging revision shoulder surgeries. We are one of only a few centers in South Florida with the expertise to handle these complex cases.
