Hand and Wrist Care
Conditions and injuries affecting the hands and wrists require treatment from experienced specialists. Our doctors offer non-surgical and surgical care.
There are a few things you do in a day that don’t require you to use your hands and wrists. So, when a hand or wrist condition or injury causes pain and limited mobility, it can significantly affect your life. Simple tasks like tying your shoes, typing on a keyboard, or opening a jar become painful.
If you have a hand or wrist condition that’s slowing you down, the specialists at Memorial Orthopedic Services can help. We use the most advanced diagnostic techniques to pinpoint the issue. Then, our doctors provide comprehensive treatment, which may include injections, surgery, or other therapies. Our goal is to get you moving without pain as quickly as possible.
Hand and Wrist Conditions We Treat
Our specialists use advanced techniques to care for all types of hand and wrist conditions.
Cartilage in the joints provides a cushion between the bones. When the cartilage wears out, bone rubs directly on bone, causing pain and stiffness
The median nerve runs down the arm through a narrow passage in the wrist called the carpal tunnel. If this nerve is compressed, it leads to tingling, numbness, and pain in your forearm, thumb, and index, middle, and ring fingers.
The hands and wrists are made up of many bones, muscles, and ligaments that can easily be injured. A hand or wrist fracture is a break or crack in one or more of the small bones of the fingers (phalanges), the long bones in the hand (metacarpals), or the two bones that make up the forearm (radius and ulna).
Your hands and wrists contain dozens of tendons, ligaments, and nerves. A tear or injury to any of them can lead to pain and limited function.
Sometimes, a tendon in a finger or thumb becomes swollen and can’t move smoothly. The finger gets stuck in a bent position, making it difficult and painful to straighten out.
Diagnosing Hand and Wrist Conditions
We use various imaging techniques to accurately diagnose hand and wrist conditions. In addition to X-rays and MRI, we often use diagnostic musculoskeletal (MSK) ultrasound for hand and wrist injuries. This technology allows us to see the muscles, nerves, tendons, and ligaments in motion. MSK ultrasound provides a roadmap that guides treatment.
We also use a combined study that includes electromyography and nerve conduction for people with carpal tunnel syndrome. These tests help determine how much the nerve is compressed and how best to treat it.
Treatments for Hand and Wrist Conditions
In many cases, we can successfully treat hand and wrist conditions using conservative, non-surgical methods. From customized physical therapy programs to pioneering regenerative medicine, we’ll create an effective treatment plan for you.
For injections, we often use ultrasound to guide the procedure and ensure the most precise placement.
Our non-surgical therapies include:
- Corticosteroid (cortisone) injections: Steroid medications can reduce inflammation and relieve hand and wrist pain when injected into damaged tissue.
- Prolotherapy: Prolotherapy uses a sugar solution that’s injected into muscles, tendons or ligaments to trigger a healing response.
- Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections: PRP uses concentrated plasma from your blood that’s injected into damaged cartilage, tendons or ligaments. It can help accelerate the repair of those soft tissues.
- Bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) injections: During the BMAC procedure, we collect bone marrow aspirate concentrate from your bones. Then, we inject the concentrate into damaged tissue to stimulate healing.
- Microfragmented adipose tissue (MFAT) injections: MFAT injections contain fat cells collected from the belly or thigh. The cells are injected into tendons and ligaments to encourage tissue restoration.
- Physical therapy: Our Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Center has specialized hand therapists on-site to work with patients before and after or instead of surgery. Physical therapy is an integral part of the treatment process for most patients. Our therapists and physicians work together to ensure you achieve excellent results.
Hand and wrist surgeries are delicate, complex procedures. We use minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques to minimize the risk of complications and speed recovery. The surgeon makes two or more small incisions in the wrist. They insert an arthroscope (a thin tube with a camera on one end) through one of the incisions and slender instruments through another. The camera enables us to see and repair the muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves.
Our hand and wrist surgeries include:
- Arthroscopic surgery
- Carpal tunnel release
- Fracture repair
- Tendon, ligament, or nerve repair
- Trigger finger release
