Regenerative Medicine

Pioneering therapies called orthobiologics can help your body heal itself.

Our bodies have a natural ability to heal. The emerging field of regenerative medicine seeks to understand and support that natural ability. Treatments include orthobiologic therapies that use the body’s own healing components to manage symptoms and improve function for a range of orthopedic conditions.

At Memorial Orthopedic Services, our sports medicine specialists use these innovative, minimally invasive approaches as part of a comprehensive care plan. We aim to help you reduce pain, improve your mobility and return to the activities you love.

Regenerative Therapy Types

Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC)

BMAC is created from a sample of your own bone marrow, usually taken from your pelvic bone. The marrow is processed to concentrate a mixture of various cells and growth factors, which are then injected into the injured area. BMAC injections are thought to help improve the healing environment, which may help reduce inflammation and support the body’s repair processes.

Microfragmented Adipose Tissue (MFAT)

MFAT is created from a sample of your own fat (adipose) tissue, typically taken from your abdomen, sides, or thighs via liposuction. The tissue is then cleaned and filtered to make it easier to inject into the injured area. MFAT injections may help reduce inflammation and support the body’s natural healing response.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP is created from a sample of your own blood. The blood is processed in a centrifuge to separate and concentrate the platelets, which are cells rich in growth factors and healing signals. The platelet-rich plasma is then injected into the injured area. PRP injections may help signal the body’s own repair processes and reduce symptoms associated with inflammation.

Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy involves injecting a solution made of dextrose (a medical-grade sugar) mixed with saline into the affected area. The injection is intended to create a mild, localized inflammatory response to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes.

The devices we use to prepare your own tissues are cleared by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). However, using these therapies to treat orthopedic conditions is considered off-label and hasn't been formally approved by the FDA. Using off-label therapies is a common practice where doctors use their professional judgment to determine the best course of treatment for an individual.

Most insurance companies don't cover regenerative therapies like PRP, BMAC, and MFAT. These treatments are typically an out-of-pocket expense. Our staff will provide you with clear information about the costs associated with your treatment plan before you schedule any procedure.

Conditions We Treat With Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative therapies may be an effective non-surgical option to help manage symptoms and improve function for a variety of orthopedic and sports-related conditions. After a comprehensive evaluation, your sports medicine specialist may discuss these therapies as part of a treatment plan for conditions such as:

  • Arthritis (such as knee or hip)
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Labral tears (shoulder or hip)
  • Ligament sprains (such as ankle sprains)
  • Meniscus or cartilage injuries
  • Muscle injuries
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Tendon injuries (such as partial rotator cuff tear, Achilles tendonitis, patellar tendonitis, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow)

Who Is a Good Candidate for Regenerative Medicine?

One of our sports medicine specialists will perform a thorough assessment to determine if you're a good candidate for regenerative therapy. These treatments are not typically the first line of defense. In general, you may be a candidate if:

  • You have persistent pain that disrupts your daily activities.
  • More conservative treatments, such as physical therapy, bracing, and anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs), have not provided adequate relief.
  • You wish to consider alternatives to more invasive surgery.
