MBSAQIP Bariatric Accredited Center seal

Our specially trained bariatric surgeons in the Weight-Loss Surgery Program perform surgery at the following Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) accredited bariatric centers: Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Hospital Pembroke, and Memorial Hospital West. They can help you achieve weight loss and better health for life when other weight loss options have not worked. Obesity is one of the most common chronic health conditions in the United States. If you are unable to lose weight on your own with diet and exercise, it’s not because you lack the willpower or you haven’t found the right eating plan.

This is why we offer a comprehensive approach to weight loss that includes specialized bariatric surgeons, dietitians, and fitness experts working together for your well-being. Obesity not only can limit your ability to be active, it can contribute to serious medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea.

Don’t let your weight keep you from living life to the fullest.

Change Your Life with Bariatric Surgery

How does bariatric surgery work?

There are three ways that bariatric surgery can help you lose weight:

  • Limiting the amount of food you eat by making your stomach smaller
  • Reducing how many calories your body absorbs after you eat
  • Changing the way your hormones signal that you are hungry

Discover more about our weight loss surgery options.

Can bariatric surgery improve my overall health?

Losing weight can improve your overall health and quality of life. Being overweight or obese makes it harder to participate in daily activities. It can also make some health conditions, such as heart disease or diabetes worse and lead to other chronic health conditions.

Other issues that obese patients may suffer from include:

  • Arthritis or joint disease
  • Cancer
  • GERD (acid reflux)
  • High blood pressure
  • Kidney disease
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
What is minimally invasive weight loss surgery?

Each year, our surgeons have performed thousands of minimally invasive bariatric surgery procedures featuring smaller incisions (minimally invasive). We use the latest technology and techniques for effective and safe results with advanced minimally invasive surgery.

When compared to traditional open surgery, the benefits of minimally invasive weight loss surgery include:
  • Less pain
  • Quicker recovery
  • Smaller scars
  • Very low rate of complications
Who is eligible for bariatric surgery?

Anyone can get weight loss surgery, but it is not the right choice for everyone who needs to lose weight. In general, we use these guidelines to determine eligibility for bariatric surgery.

  • Body mass index (BMI) is 40 or more
  • BMI is 35 or more and you have other significant medical conditions
  • You have not lost weight on physician-guided diet and exercise plans
  • You are 18 or older
  • You are 15-17 (as part of our Adolescent Weight Loss Surgery program with parental consent)
