Memorial Transplant Institute: Our Story

Memorial Transplant Institute, based at Memorial Regional Hospital, is a labor of love – the result of almost a decade of development.

Our goal: To provide you and your loved ones with the most personalized, innovative care possible as you embark on the journey of pursuing a heart or kidney transplant.

Where it all began

Memorial Healthcare System entered the organ transplant field in 2010 when our pediatric hospital, Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital in Hollywood, received federal approval from UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing) to launch a pediatric heart transplant program. Since 2010, we have successfully performed more than 40 pediatric transplants, with patient survival rates exceeding national averages. In recognition of our pediatric program's high standards and performance, we were invited to join Optum's Transplant Center of Excellence Network in 2017.

Expanding care

In 2014, UNOS approved the launch of our adult cardiac transplant program. We performed the first adult heart transplant in Broward County in September 2014. Since then, this program has seen steady growth. We set our sights on expanding our services to meet the needs of even more transplant patients in the South Florida area. In 2017, we received federal approval from UNOS to launch an adult kidney transplant program with pediatric transplant capabilities and to perform laparoscopic living donor kidney recoveries at Memorial Regional Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital.
