Institutional Review Board (IRB)
Protecting human subjects
- The IRB is responsible for reviewing all research conducted at Memorial Healthcare System or by Memorial Healthcare System employees for ethical standards, scientific merit, and regulatory compliance. Memorial Healthcare System Institutional Review Board is the IRB for the South Broward Hospital system facilities which include:
- Memorial Regional Hospital
- Memorial Hospital West
- Memorial Hospital Miramar
- Memorial Pembroke Hospital
- Memorial Regional Hospital South
- Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital
The IRB works to protect the rights and welfare of people who volunteer to take part in human subject research. The IRB is guided by the ethical principles set forth in the National Commission for the Protection of Human Subjects of Biomedical and Behavioral Research report, called the Belmont Report.
An IRB serves its own, specialized functions but works in coordination with other hospital departments and committees. The Memorial Healthcare System IRB includes physicians, pharmacists, nurses, clergy, community members and hospital employees with diverse backgrounds.
The IRB office staff is able to provide guidance on your regulatory questions and research submissions.

If you are a volunteer in research being conducted or approved within Memorial Healthcare System and you have a question about your rights as a research participant, you may reach the IRB office by telephone, email or in writing. We will respond promptly to any inquiries by the end of the next business day.
For investigators and coordinators, please review the information on our website for training requirements and suggestions for "Get Started" with your submission to the IRB. Contact the IRB office for a current roster of members and schedule for upcoming deadlines. These items are also posted in the electronic IRB system. You can request a new account within the electronic IRB system. This system requires Memorial intranet or remote access. If you are unable to access the electronic IRB system, contact the IRB office.
