Program Director’s Welcome

Welcome to the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program at Memorial Healthcare System. I am delighted that you are considering our program as you take the next step in your career in critical care medicine.

Our goal is to develop outstanding intensivists who possess the clinical knowledge, procedural expertise, judgment, leadership skills, and compassion necessary to care for the most critically ill and medically complex patients. We believe that exceptional critical care training is built upon broad clinical exposure, progressive responsibility, strong mentorship, and the opportunity to learn within a diverse, high-acuity healthcare system.

During our two-year fellowship, fellows will experience an extensive range of critical care environments, including medical and surgical intensive care, neurocritical care, cardiac surgical intensive care, and trauma. This breadth provides exposure to critically ill patients across virtually every major discipline of medicine and surgery.

Fellows will participate in the care of patients undergoing complex vascular, head and neck, and other major surgical procedures, as well as patients requiring renal and pancreas transplantation. Our cardiovascular experience includes advanced heart failure, cardiogenic shock, complex postoperative cardiac care, and mechanical circulatory support. Fellows will also have access to specialized elective experiences.

Point-of-care ultrasound is an integral part of modern critical care practice and an important component of our fellowship. Fellows will develop hands-on skills in critical care ultrasonography, including cardiac, pulmonary, vascular, and abdominal applications, while gaining extensive experience with the bedside procedures fundamental to the practice of critical care medicine.

These clinical experiences are complemented by a comprehensive educational program that includes didactic conferences, case-based learning, multidisciplinary education, simulation, procedural instruction, quality improvement, and bedside teaching. Just as importantly, fellows will learn from a core faculty of experienced intensivists and subspecialists who bring years of clinical and teaching experience and who are deeply invested in fellow education and professional development.

One of the greatest strengths of Memorial Healthcare System is the opportunity to train within a large and diverse healthcare system while caring for patients with an extraordinary spectrum of critical illness. Fellows become integral members of multidisciplinary teams and progressively develop the ability to manage complex clinical situations, communicate effectively with patients and families, collaborate across specialties, and lead the delivery of high-quality critical care.

Our aim is not simply to train physicians who can manage critically ill patients. We want our graduates to become confident, thoughtful, compassionate intensivists and future leaders in critical care medicine.
