Inborn Errors of Immunity

People with inborn errors of immunity (IEI) have immune systems that do not work the way they should. This means they can get sick more often, have trouble getting better, or may get stronger infections than other people.

Although these conditions may start at birth, they are often found in babies, young children or not until adulthood. IEI conditions can present due to changes in certain genes passed down from parents to children. The cause of immune defects is not always genetically determined, but we can perform immune evaluations to help uncover the cause.

Some immune problems are not inherited. These are called acquired or secondary immune deficiencies. They can happen later in life because of things like certain viruses, long-term illnesses, or medicines that make the immune system weaker.
