Low Testosterone
We offer a full range of treatments for low testosterone, including those that preserve fertility.
What Is Low Testosterone (Low T)?
Low testosterone or Low T, also called male hypogonadism, happens when your body doesn’t make enough of the hormone testosterone. In males, testosterone production occurs mainly in the testicles. It triggers puberty and the development of male characteristics. Testosterone also supports sperm production, red blood cell production and sexual desire (libido).
Symptoms of Low T include infertility, low energy and reduced libido. You may also experience depression, muscle loss and poor concentration. Untreated, Low T is associated with a shorter lifespan and increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
What Causes Low Testosterone?
Low T can be caused by damage to your testicles, such as from injuries, infections, cancer and cancer treatments. It can also occur from conditions present at birth, such as muscular dystrophy or Klinefelter syndrome.
In some cases, low testosterone is the result of changes in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland in your brain. Hormones produced by these glands assist with testosterone production. Aging, medications and diseases, such as diabetes, obesity, sleep apnea and alcohol use disorder, can all affect hypothalamus and pituitary function.
How to Test for Low Testosterone?
Your doctor will review your symptoms and medical history and perform a physical exam. They will also order a testosterone test. This test typically requires collecting two separate blood samples in the morning when testosterone is at its peak.
Blood tests can also show if Low T is due to problems with your hypothalamus or pituitary gland.

TRT is for men who have low testosterone and are experiencing symptoms. It’s not an option if:
You should not use TRT if you have certain conditions, such as:
- Blood clots
- Breast cancer
- Elevated red blood cells
- Prostate cancer or high risk of prostate cancer
- Recent stroke or heart attack
- Untreated sleep apnea
TRT lowers sperm production and can affect your ability to have a child. We offer alternative treatments that increase testosterone and safeguard fertility, including:
- Clomiphene, which boosts testosterone and sperm counts by stimulating the production of certain hormones in the pituitary gland
- Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG), which increases testosterone production in your testicles
