Erectile Dysfunction (ED)

We provide complete care for ED to restore your sexual function and well-being.

ED is common and treatable but often difficult to discuss. Our urologists are here for you to understand what’s causing your symptoms and find an effective treatment.

What Is Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?

Erectile dysfunction is an inability to get or keep an erection. Some people with ED can get an erection, but not all the time. For others, the erection may not be firm enough or last long enough for sex.

ED causes vary widely. They include chronic diseases, psychological issues, and other urologic conditions. Medications and lifestyle can also impact erectile function.

According to medical experts, ED affects at least half of men between the ages of 40 and 70. While older men are more likely to have ED, it’s not a natural part of aging. If ED affects your quality of life, treatment can be effective for anyone.

Diagnosing ED

Diagnosis requires a thorough review of your physical, mental, and sexual health to better understand your condition and potential causes. Your doctor will ask questions about your lifestyle as well as your erections, sexual desire, ejaculation, and orgasms. They’ll review your medical history, perform a physical exam, and order laboratory tests as needed.

ED Treatment

ED treatment may require one or more approaches. Our urologists consider your condition, goals for treatment, and personal preferences. They then create a customized plan for you.

The first step in treatment is often to address underlying health conditions that may be leading to ED. That may involve helping you manage diabetes or high blood pressure or providing testosterone replacement therapy.

Your treatment may also include other strategies, such as:

Counseling

Mental health counseling is an important treatment for ED related to depression, anxiety, and stress. A mental health professional can also help address relationship issues or sex-specific concerns, such as fear of sexual failure.

ED injections

This treatment involves injecting a medication into the side of your penis to increase blood flow. This medication also comes as a suppository you insert into the opening at the tip of your penis (urethra).

ED medications

ED medications (also called PDE5 inhibitors) are oral medications that improve erections by increasing blood flow to the penis. There are several types, including Sildenafil, Tadalafil, Vardenafil, and Avanafil.

Lifestyle changes

Changing your lifestyle isn’t always easy. But being able to have better erections may be a good incentive. We work with you to help you quit smoking and stop alcohol and drug use. Other changes can also improve ED, such as exercising more often and maintaining a healthy weight.

Penile implants

Penile implant surgery is usually an option when other treatments are not effective. Our urologists are skilled surgeons, offering the latest inflatable and malleable implant types.

After surgery, you may go home that day or stay overnight in the hospital. Recovery typically takes four to six weeks before you can use the implant.

Penis pump

A penis pump is a vacuum device you place over your penis. By removing air from inside the device, you draw blood into your penis, causing an erection. An elastic ring you place at the base of your penis helps maintain the erection for up to 30 minutes.
