Obesity is one of the most common chronic health conditions in the United States. It can limit your ability to be active and contribute to serious medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea. If you're unable to lose weight on your own with diet and exercise, it’s not because you lack the willpower or you haven’t found the right eating plan. A number of factors can affect your risk of gaining weight, from lifestyle and stress to genetics and your environment.
That's why we offer a comprehensive approach to weight loss that includes specialized bariatric surgeons, dietitians, and fitness experts working together for your well-being. Our specially trained bariatric surgeons in the Weight-Loss Surgery Program can help you achieve weight loss and better health for life when other weight-loss options haven't worked. They perform surgery at the following Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) accredited bariatric centers:
- Memorial Regional Hospital
- Memorial Hospital Pembroke
- Memorial Hospital West
Don’t let your weight keep you from living life to the fullest.
Bariatric Surgery or Weight-Loss Medications?
In addition to bariatric surgery, Memorial Healthcare System’s Comprehensive Weight-Loss Management Program offers a non-surgical path to weight loss. Our obesity medicine physicians combine prescription medications with comprehensive support to help you reach your weight loss goals. Learn more about non-surgical weight loss.

Change Your Life with Bariatric Surgery
There are three ways that bariatric surgery can help you lose weight:
- Limiting the amount of food you eat by making your stomach smaller
- Reducing how many calories your body absorbs after you eat
- Changing the way your hormones signal that you are hungry

Losing weight can improve your overall health and quality of life. Being overweight or obese makes it harder to participate in daily activities. It can also make some health conditions, such as heart disease, worse and lead to other chronic health conditions.
Other issues that obese patients may suffer from include:
- Arthritis or joint disease
- Cancer
- Diabetes
- GERD (acid reflux)
- High blood pressure
- Kidney disease
- Obstructive sleep apnea
Each year, our surgeons have performed thousands of minimally invasive bariatric surgery procedures featuring smaller incisions (minimally invasive). We use the latest technology and techniques for effective and safe results with advanced minimally invasive surgery.
When compared to traditional open surgery, the benefits of minimally invasive weight loss surgery include:- Less pain
- Quicker recovery
- Smaller scars
- Very low rate of complications
Anyone can get weight loss surgery, but it is not the right choice for everyone who needs to lose weight. In general, we use these guidelines to determine eligibility for bariatric surgery.
- Body mass index (BMI) of 35 or greater
- BMI of 30-35 with weight-associated comorbidities
- You have not lost weight on physician-guided diet and exercise plans
- You are 18 or older
- You are 13-17 (as part of our Adolescent Weight Loss Surgery program with parental consent)
