I am a maternal-fetal specialist and medical director of Academics and Clinical Research of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Program at Memorial Healthcare System. I am board-certified in both obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine. I care for pregnant patients with complications such as severe preeclampsia, preterm labor, preterm rupture of membranes, incompetent cervix, heart disease, lupus, diabetes, chronic hypertension, advanced maternal age, placental abnormalities and fetal abnormalities and growth disturbances. I have a special interest in the management of expectant severe preeclampsia (delaying delivery when possible) and the ultrasound evaluation of placenta accretas.

I was drawn to the medical profession by a love for science and teaching along with the desire to solve problems and help people. Medicine blended all my interests. I originally wanted to pursue a career in primary care, but during training quickly found I loved the diversity of the OB/GYN field. There are many challenges in managing complicated pregnancies, including the need to manage other conditions that the mom may have that may impact the pregnancy, and how her pregnancy may impact those other conditions. It’s a balancing act, and I love the challenge.

When caring for patients, I see myself as a partner, advocate, and guide, helping them to attain the best possible outcome. I encourage my patients and their families to ask questions as I want them to understand the process and their options; we are partners together in their care. Many are understandably fearful after receiving an unexpected high-risk diagnosis and my goal is to decrease that anxiety and bring hope. Even when I can’t change the facts or a challenging diagnosis, I want to make sure we achieve the best possible outcome in any given circumstance. I find fulfillment in being there alongside my patients, during the highs and lows of what they experience. It is important to me that the women who come to me feel supported and cared for.

As we continue to grow our MFM program at Memorial, we continue to expand our research in this specialized area of medicine.

My research interests and recent research projects focus on the strategies to safely prolong pregnancy in patients with severe preeclampsia, the reduction of spontaneous preterm delivery and sonographic markers of accretas. Other interests include treatment of opioid use in pregnancy, particularly focused on medically supervised withdrawal and reduction of neonatal abstinence syndrome.
