Florida Blue Insurance Coverage – Important Update

Important Information for Patients with Florida Blue Insurance

Memorial Healthcare System (Memorial) is actively negotiating with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Inc. (“Florida Blue”), for a new agreement so that we can continue providing the exceptional healthcare our South Florida communities rely on.

Should an agreement not be reached, all Memorials Hospitals and facilities will be out of network on September 1, 2025.  This impacts all Florida Blue health plans, including commercial (employer-sponsored and ACA Marketplace) and Medicare Advantage.

Why is Memorial Negotiating with Florida Blue?

Memorial is currently negotiating a new agreement with Florida Blue to ensure continued in-network access for patients and fair reimbursement for the care we provide. The negotiations are part of a standard process that occurs when contracts are up for renewal.

As one of the largest and most trusted health systems in South Florida, Memorial is focused on reaching an agreement that supports patient access, system sustainability, and high-quality care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Patient Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Memorial and Florida Blue Negotiation

Q: Is Memorial still in network for Florida Blue Members?
A:
Yes, as of today, Memorial remains in-network for all Florida Blue members. Patients can continue to receive care at Memorial without changes to coverage or cost.

Q: What happens if no agreement is reached between Memorial and Florida Blue?
A: If a new contract is not finalized, Memorial could become out of network for Florida Blue members starting September 1, 2025.

Q: Which hospitals, facilities, and Physicians are impacted by the negotiations?
A: All Memorial Healthcare System hospitals, physicians, urgent care centers, and specialty facilities as well all affiliated providers who participate through Memorial’s contracted network would be affected

Q: Which Florida Blue plans are impacted by the negotiations?
A: All patients insured under Florida Blue. These negotiations impact Florida Blue’s commercial plans (including employer-sponsored and ACA Marketplace) and Medicare Advantage plans. Impacted patients may have insurance ID cards that display the names Anthem, Florida Blue Cross Blue Shield, Elevance, and other Blue Cross Blue Shield Plans from other states.

Q: What does this mean for patients?
A: Memorial is currently in-network for Florida Blue members. However, in the event no agreement is reached, we would be out of network with Florida Blue on September 1, 2025.  Please be advised if we don’t reach an agreement by July 23, 2025, we will have to stop scheduling appointments for Florida Blue enrollees for services after September 1, 2025.  Should there be any further changes that affect access or coverage, we will provide clear and timely updates.

Q: What does being out-of-network mean for me??
A: Out-of-Network means that Memorial and/or your physician no longer have a contract with Florida Blue. As a result, non-emergency services may have higher out of pocket costs than if you receive care from an in-network provider.

Under federal law, patients are protected against higher out of pocket costs when they receive emergency services and care -- even if a provider is out of network. You can read more about your protections for receiving out-of-network emergency services and care here: https://www.mhs.net/patients-and-visitors/billing/no-surprise-billiing

Patients with Florida Blue coverage who are in an active course of treatment may be eligible for Continuity of Care (CoC) benefits, based on their individual plan. Eligibility for Continuity of Care coverage is determined by Florida Blue. To find out if you qualify, you can contact Florida Blue directly by calling the number on the back of your insurance card.

Q: Whom do patients call if they have questions about their benefits coverage?
A: Patients can call the number on the back of their Florida Blue Cross Blue Shield health insurance card and ask any specific questions regarding their health benefits.

Q: What if I have other questions about the negotiation that weren’t answered here?
A: For additional information you may contact our dedicated information line at (954)-276-5501
