A new program that aims to empower patients to take charge of their own health is now available at Memorial Healthcare System. Regardless of whether an individual’s focus is on preventive wellness or symptom management during treatment for chronic conditions, Memorial’s Division of Integrative Medicine, under the direction of Ashwin Mehta, MD, will incorporate a multi-disciplinary approach that is tailored to the individual and designed to strengthen the body’s own healing potential.

Evidence-based care that includes acupuncture, massage, nutritional guidance, exercise recommendations, and therapeutic yoga will complement more traditional treatments and the leading-edge technologies at Memorial, to produce better patient outcomes. Sometimes called “lifestyle medicine,” the treatment options are being utilized to aid those with cancer, heart disease, and chronic neurological conditions.

Dr. Ashwin Mehta, medical director for Integrative Medicine, is board certified in internal medicine and sleep medicine. He joined Memorial Healthcare System and Memorial Physician Group to launch the Memorial Division of Integrative Medicine. His medical expertise includes nutrition, exercise, sleep, yoga, and mindfulness, and he has developed innovative, client-centered wellness programs aimed to enhance quality of life throughout the spectrum of care.

“These treatments are available to adults with a variety of health concerns, and these treatments enable the patient to take a more active role in their own care,” said Mehta, who most recently served as chair of Integrative Medicine at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. “Preventative medicine and positive health behaviors, when used in combination with traditional treatment approaches, absolutely improve the quality of a patient’s life.”

Mehta says his team is already working closely with the physicians and staff at the Memorial Cancer Institute, Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute, Memorial Neuroscience Institute, and the Memorial Rehabilitation Institute to improve patient outcomes and satisfaction. Health issues that include neuropathy, fatigue, poor sleep quality, emotional distress, pain, anxiety, sexual dysfunction, and weight loss/gain are also addressable through Memorial’s multi-faceted approach.

The Department of Integrative Medicine will have offices at Hollywood’s Memorial Regional Hospital and Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines.
