About Me

I am geriatrician and medical director of Geriatric Medicine at Memorial Healthcare System where I specialize in the care of older adults. I provide routine medical care and assistance with aging frailty; falls and mobility problems; polypharmacy; mild cognitive impairment and dementia.

I became a geriatrician when I came to the US from Peru and saw that life here was different as people aged. I was inspired to help and support older persons as they go through changes and challenges of aging and continue to lead long and healthy lives.

I have a holistic approach to caring for older persons that involves looking beyond their physical needs to see each person as a whole. This includes addressing their emotional, social, and spiritual needs. I love how the emphasis of geriatric care goes beyond medical issues to consider the older person's mental health; function and independence; social life and environment.

In addition to providing patient care, I’m also involved in advancing the field of geriatric care through governance, education, training, and research. I am chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Geriatric Medicine Board and member of the ABIM Council, and clinical affiliate professor of Geriatric Medicine in the Department of Medicine, Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University.

I am also co-chief editor of the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging, co-founder of the Global Frailty Network, and co-editor of an upcoming book that features worldwide experts in the fields of aging, longevity and geroscience titled Frailty: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Assessment, Management, and Prevention. I have also authored several peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in the fields of aging, geroscience, longevity and geriatric medicine.

Before joining Memorial, I was the associate director for Clinical Innovation at the Miami VA Healthcare System Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC); professor of Clinical Medicine in the Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at the University of Miami School of Medicine, and former director of the Geriatric Medicine Fellowship at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine for 17 years.
