Florida Hospital Association Honors Memorial With Three Top Awards

FHA Awards

Hollywood-based Memorial Healthcare System was recently honored with three significant awards by the Florida Hospital Association at its annual meeting: “Caregiver of the Year,” “Innovation of the Year in Patient Care,” and “Best Hospital Workplace.”

  • Rayford Shipman earned the ‘Celebration of Service’ caregiver award (video) for providing those who’ve suffered traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, lost limbs, or had strokes opportunities to participate in sports tailored to their abilities. As manager of the Adaptive Sports & Recreation program at Memorial Regional Hospital South, Shipman positively impacted more than 500 physically disabled patients in 2016 by facilitating their participation in hand cycling, disc golf, adaptive bowling, fishing, and other activities. The Memorial Sharks, a wheelchair basketball team he organized, finished second in the nation in recent competition. Shipman continues to grow the program through a variety of efforts.

  • The award for “Innovation of the Year in Patient Care” (over 150 beds) recognizes a multi-disciplinary collaboration between medical teams at the Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital. The group performed a ventricular tachycardia ablation via a trans-apical approach on a 14-month-old, just the third time the procedure had ever been done anywhere, and the first time it had ever been performed on a child. Their work corrected Amelia’s arrhythmia and saved the young girl’s life.
  • Memorial Healthcare System (over 150 beds) was honored for “Best Hospital Workplace” for promoting employee satisfaction and engagement. Its staff of more than 13,000 was provided opportunities to advance through merit, professional development, and paid college tuition. Nearly 20% of Memorial’s workforce has been with the healthcare system for more 15 years and its turnover rate is 33% lower than the industry average.
  • The Florida Hospital Association annually honors health care leaders and organizations committed to providing high-quality care to all Floridians. Its awards highlight personal and organizational accomplishments within the Florida hospital community. Its 2017 Celebration of Achievement in Quality and Service banquet was held in Orlando recently.
