Memorial Hospital West Family Birthplace is hosting "Understanding Fatherhood," a two-hour class, for new and expectant dads as they prepare for the journey of parenthood.

This class is designed to support new and expectant fathers as they prepare for the journey of parenthood. Whether you’re getting ready to welcome your first child or want to build confidence in your role, this course provides practical guidance and support.

Led by encouraging male staff members, this class provides a supportive and relatable space where dads can gain hands-on skills, ask questions, and connect with others going through the same life-changing journey.

TOPICS

  • Get involved early in their baby’s life by actively participating in the pregnancy experience-attending prenatal visits, joining classes, and supporting their partner.
  • Prepare the home for a safe and welcoming environment, including safe sleep practices.
  • Know what to expect when labor begins, how to support their partner, and what to pack in a “dad bag” for the hospital.
  • Take part in hands-on practice for baby care basics, including diapering, burping, and holding a newborn.
  • Support their partner during labor, delivery, and the hospital stay.
  • Recognize and cope with the emotional challenges that come with early fatherhood, including signs of postpartum depression.
  • Interact with their newborn in a meaningful way from day one and support breastfeeding.
  • Communicate effectively with their partner throughout pregnancy and after the baby is born.
