Our Diagnostic Process

Whether you come to us directly or through a referral from your physician, physical therapist or athletic trainer, we begin your care with a complete evaluation. To determine the causes of your symptoms, we:

  • Conduct a physical exam
  • Review your medical history
  • Discuss symptoms
  • Review any injuries and history of physical activity or sports participation

You may need further tests to confirm a diagnosis, including:

  • Imaging studies: We use technology for X-ray, MRI, ultrasound and CT imaging. These studies help us check for broken bones, tendon and ligament tears and other problems.
  • Joint aspiration: For people with joint inflammation and swelling, we may use a needle to remove a sample of fluid from the joint. We test the fluid to see if an infection or an autoimmune condition may be causing the inflammation.
  • Blood tests: Blood tests may be used to check for indications of an infection or a chronic condition that may be causing your symptoms.

Our Treatment Options for Sports Injuries

Our treatment goals for sports injuries are to help you regain function as quickly as possible and to prevent future injuries. We focus on conservative, nonsurgical therapies such as physical therapy, medication and injections to help relieve pain and other symptoms. These treatments are designed to speed up the healing process to help you get back to the activities you love as soon as possible.

You may need one or more treatment options, such as:

Medications
Anti-inflammatories and other medications help reduce swelling, inflammation, pain and other symptoms. We consider medications you may be taking for other conditions when we prescribe a medication regimen for you.
Injections

When appropriate, we provide injections in our offices during your appointment for your convenience and immediate symptom relief. We offer:

  • Steroid/cortisone injections to reduce pain and inflammation
  • Ultrasound-guided platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, which use your blood enhanced with a higher concentration of platelets to stimulate the healing process
Physical Therapy

We may recommend physical therapy to:

  • Strengthen muscles
  • Improve specific movements or posture needed for sports or dance
  • Prevent future injury
  • Improve recovery after surgery, to help you regain your previous level of function

We develop a customized plan with our integrated sports physical therapy and rehabilitation team, providing the diagnosis and other guidance for treatment. Our physical therapists provide reports to the physicians on your progress. You will meet with your physician periodically to discuss any adjustments to your treatment plan.
