Memorial Sports Medicine Center has been named the official medical service provider of the Miami Sharks, South Florida’s Major League Rugby team. The Sharks began their inaugural season last month, with Memorial clinicians providing preventative care, as well as attending to the injury and rehabilitation needs of the professional athletes.

Memorial’s orthopedic and sports medicine specialists serve as team physicians, with athletic trainers also on-site with the Sharks at Chase Stadium, home of Inter Miami CF of Major League Soccer. The team’s jersey also features a Memorial Sports Medicine Center logo, with signage throughout the stadium spotlighting the partnership.

Memorial’s involvement represents its commitment to provide top-notch orthopedic and medical services to its community athletic teams and universities. In addition to the rugby team, it also works with Florida Memorial University, Florida National University, and the University of Fort Lauderdale, among others.

“Our sports medicine center has been built to meet the needs of South Floridians,” said Rayford Shipman, director of the orthopedic service line at Memorial Healthcare System. “This includes not only professional and amateur athletes, but also recreational competitors and individuals of any age that suffer from sports-related injuries or chronic wear-and-tear conditions.”

Memorial was the first in Broward County to have a fully comprehensive adult sports medicine program, with orthopedic surgery, primary care sports medicine, rehabilitation, physical and occupational therapy. Memorial Sports Medicine Center utilizes this multi-disciplinary approach to provide advanced solutions that prevent and treat sports-related injuries to maintain individualized performance levels for all patients.

Memorial physicians dedicated to the care of the Sharks include Drs. Geden Franck, Eduardo Natal-Albelo, Giorgio Negron, Alexander Nguyen, and Marvin K. Smith.
