Memorial Sports Medicine Center has been named the official sports medical service provider of Florida Memorial University (FMU) Athletics. The designation extends a partnership that for the past five years has had Memorial Healthcare System clinicians providing preventative care, as well as attending to the injury and rehabilitation needs of the school’s student-athletes.

Memorial’s outreach is part of its commitment to provide top-notch orthopedic and medical services to its community athletic teams and universities. In addition to FMU, it also works with Florida National University and the University of Fort Lauderdale, among others.

“Our sports medicine center is growing to meet the needs of South Floridians,” said Rayford Shipman, director of the orthopedic service line at Memorial Healthcare System. “This includes not only professional and amateur athletes, but also recreational competitors and individuals of any age that suffer sports-related injuries.”

Memorial was the first in Broward County to have a fully comprehensive adult sports medicine program, with orthopedic surgery, primary care, rehabilitation, and physical therapy part of the multidisciplinary approach. Its specialists work to provide advanced solutions to prevent/ treat sports-related injuries and maintain performance at whatever level patients are at.

Based in Miami Gardens, Florida Memorial competes in the Sun Conference at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) level. It fields teams in 13 sports, including football and men’s and women’s basketball.

“When we have great partners like Memorial that step up to the table, it’s truly transformative,” said Florida Memorial University President Jaffus Hardrick. I’m truly grateful for what is happening at our university and the impact we’re going to have in this community through this partnership.”
