New scientific studies have found an association between the elevated levels of inflammatory markers produced when an organ malfunctions and cancer, a person’s mood, and other illnesses like allergies, cardiovascular conditions and autoimmune disorders.

“Many times those who suffer from chronic illnesses are affected by depression, which is linked to elevated inflammatory marker levels. These cases may be treated with natural anti-inflammatories such as omega-3 fatty acids,” explains Dr. Ashwin Mehta, medical director of Memorial Healthcare System’s Division of Integrative Medicine. Studies have also shown better depression management results in patients who have taken omega-3 in combination with antidepressants, the specialist says.

The team led by Dr. Mehta is specifically in charge of designing a comprehensive plan that, when implemented along with the patient’s medical treatment plan, can accomplish better and faster results.

The personalized strategy focuses on a complete plan that includes a nutritional guide, exercise recommendations, therapeutic yoga, acupuncture, massages, supplements, better sleep quality and meditation.

“We incorporate healthy habits into daily life in order to boost the immune system, reduce inflammation and detoxify the body,” the expert adds.

Those who do not suffer from a chronic inflammatory illness can also benefit from the results obtained through the practice of integrative medicine. Other conditions that can be treated are:

  • Obesity and metabolic syndrome
  • Chronic pain
  • Poor sleep quality
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Mood disorders
  • Digestive disorders

According to Dr. Mehta, many ailments found in today’s society are associated with the mismanagement of stress and poor sleep quality. “The most important message that integrative medicine can send to the community is learn how to maximize your nutrition, exercise, sleep and meditation.”
