If you have a sports injury or other orthopaedic condition affecting your hands or upper extremities, you may have tried medications, injections or physical therapy to relieve your pain. If these measures have not provided sufficient relief, you may need a surgical procedure.

Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Surgery for the Shoulder, Elbow, Wrist and Hand

At Memorial Orthopaedic Surgery & Sports Medicine Center, you’ll find:

  • Experienced team: Our board-certified orthopaedic surgeons have additional fellowship training in specialties such as sports medicine and orthopedic trauma.
  • Precise diagnosis: We use advanced imaging technologies to help diagnose injuries and conditions and guide your treatment. We offer X-ray and mini-fluoroscopy (live X-ray, like a video) right in our office. Other imaging such as MRI and CT is available through Memorial Healthcare System.
  • Surgical expertise: We find the right surgical procedure for your needs. We often perform arthroscopy, a minimally invasive procedure, which uses small incisions and miniature instruments. For more complex injuries or conditions affecting the upper limbs, we may use open surgery, which uses a large incision.
  • Outpatient procedures: Our orthopaedic surgeons perform many procedures on an outpatient basis so you can go home the same day.
  • Comprehensive services: As part of your treatment plan, you receive rehabilitation and physical therapy to help you recover quickly and get back to the activities you love.

Our surgeons have extensive expertise in minimally invasive and open surgical procedures, including:

Shoulder Surgery

Our highly skilled orthopedic surgeons specialize in procedures to treat all types of shoulder injuries and conditions. We have particular experience in treating complex shoulder injuries.

Shoulder procedures we offer include:

Shoulder Arthroscopy
The surgeon uses an arthroscope (thin instrument with a tiny camera) to display images of the inside of the joint. Using miniature instruments, the surgeon treats a variety of shoulder conditions.
Rotator Cuff Repair
Surgeons reattach shoulder tendons to the top of the humerus (upper arm bone) using an arthroscopic procedure whenever possible, or open surgery if necessary.
Labrum Repair
The labrum is a ring of cartilage lining the rim of the shoulder socket that stabilizes the head of the humerus. Tears in this cartilage are called labral tears. Surgeons repair tears using arthroscopic techniques to either remove the torn cartilage fragments or reattach them with suture anchors.
Surgery for Shoulder Instability
Having repeated shoulder dislocations weakens and loosens shoulder ligaments, tendons and muscles and can lead to labral tearing, gradual bone loss and worsening shoulder instability. Surgeons can repair torn or stretched ligaments, tendons and muscles using a minimally invasive procedure.
Surgery for Arthritis
Surgeons use arthroscopy to help relieve pain, inflammation and stiffness caused by arthritis in the shoulder joint. The procedure removes cartilage fragments inside the joint. For more severe arthritis, we offer shoulder replacement surgery to replace the worn-out shoulder joint.
Fracture Care
For fractures of the collarbone (clavicle) or proximal humerus (upper end of arm bone), you may need surgery to reposition and connect the pieces of bone for proper healing. You may need screws, rods or other hardware to hold the bone pieces in place.

Arm and Elbow Surgery

Our orthopaedic surgeons repair injuries and treat conditions that affect the arm and elbow joint, using procedures such as:

Elbow Arthroscopy
If you have an elbow injury or condition that hasn’t responded to nonsurgical treatment, minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery may be the right treatment option for you.
Tendon Repair
Several tendons attach upper arm muscles (the biceps and triceps) to the shoulder and elbow. For tendon tears at the elbow, surgeons perform either arthroscopy or open surgery to reattach the tendons.
Fracture Care
For bone fractures in the elbow joint, you may need surgery to align and reconnect the pieces of bone for proper healing. You may need screws, rods or other hardware to hold the bone pieces in place. Learn more about elbow fracture open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF).
Surgery for Baseball, Golfer’s or Tennis Elbow
Our surgeons use arthroscopic methods when possible to repair or release elbow tendons. Often, however, these conditions require open surgery to access the elbow joint and tendons.

Wrist and Hand Surgery

Procedures we perform on the hand and wrist include:

Arthroscopy
Used mainly in the wrist, this surgery can treat a wide variety of sports injuries or chronic conditions.
Fracture Care
You may need surgery to realign and connect the pieces of bone to help fractures in the wrist joint or hand heal properly. The surgeon may use screws, rods or other hardware to hold the bone pieces in place.
Carpal Tunnel Release
Our surgeons perform minimally invasive procedures to relieve pressure on a nerve that causes carpal tunnel syndrome.
Tendon and Ligament Repair
We use minimally invasive procedures whenever possible to reattach torn tendons and ligaments caused by sports injuries.
