What Conditions Does Vascular Surgery Treat?

Vascular surgeons treat problems related to the blood vessels outside of your heart. The general name for this group of conditions is vascular disease. However, vascular disease is not just one disease, with one cause.

You may see a vascular surgery specialist if you have:

Aortic aneurysm: A weakness in the wall of your aorta.
Carotid artery disease: Affects the blood flow to your brain.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): A dangerous blood clot in your leg.
Peripheral artery disease (PAD): Affects the blood flow to your legs.
Renal disease: Affects blood flow to your kidneys.
Varicose veins: May be cosmetic or symptomatic.

Vascular surgeons try to manage some vascular conditions with medication first. To open up a blocked artery, we may do interventional procedures, such as angioplasty. Vascular surgeons also perform amputations.

Transcarotid Artery Revascularization (TCAR) at Memorial

Transcarotid artery stenting (TCAR) is a minimally invasive procedure that can help reduce the risk of stroke for some patients who have a blocked carotid artery.

Joshua Unger, MD, is a board-certified vascular surgeon at Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute.

He cares for patients with carotid artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, dialysis access needs, abdominal aortic aneurysms, thoracic outlet syndrome, varicose veins and venous insufficiency and other vascular diseases and concerns.

Marc Dauer, MD - Vascular Surgeon

I am a vascular surgeon at Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute. I care for patients with a variety of ailments from aortic aneurysms and carotid artery disease to deep vein thrombosis, varicose veins and lower extremity wounds. I have a specific interest in and dedication to helping patients with peripheral vascular disease who often have pain with walking, leg swelling, gangrene and ulcers. I also care for many patients who utilize hemodialysis access.
