Your heart's electrical system controls your heartbeat. The upper chambers (right and left atria) and the lower chambers (right and left ventricles) work with your heart's electrical system to keep your heart beating at an appropriate rate and even rhythm.

An arrhythmia (heart rhythm disorder) occurs when the heart beats too fast, too slow or in a disorganized way. An electrophysiologist (EP) is a heart doctor that treats heart rhythm disorders.

At Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute, our EPs diagnose and treat all types of arrhythmias. They lead one of the busiest electrophysiology labs in South Florida and remain at the forefront of their field.

What Is Electrophysiology?

Electrophysiology is the branch of cardiology that treats your heart’s electrical system, which controls your heartbeat. EPs test for all types of arrhythmias. Some heart rhythm disorders are relatively minor and need only medication or monitoring. Others are more complex, requiring a minimally invasive procedure or even open-heart surgery.

EPs perform interventional (nonsurgical) procedures such as cardiac ablation to cure arrhythmias. They also treat patients who need implantable devices to regulate their heartbeat. EPs work with a multispecialty team of heart doctors to develop care plans tailored for each individual.

Our EP lab features state-of-the-art 3D mapping systems. 3D mapping provides a highly precise image of your heart, allowing us to accurately diagnose and treat arrhythmias. This advanced technology enables us to safely perform complex procedures with excellent results.
High-volume heart treatment center
Our EP lab is one of the most active in South Florida. We perform more than 700 procedures a year to treat arrhythmias, including cardiac ablation.
Implantable device expertise
Our cardiac electrophysiology specialists have years of experience implanting and managing devices that regulate heartbeat, such as pacemakers and defibrillators. They have published numerous articles about device management, and they bring that expertise to patients every day.
Comprehensive treatments and services

We offer a complete range of electrophysiology services. Our experienced team performs leading-edge minimally invasive procedures to treat arrhythmias. We provide ongoing care and monitoring for people with implantable devices.

If you need surgery for an arrhythmia or underlying heart condition, we coordinate your care with our cardiac surgeons.

Coordination with other specialists
EPs work together with other heart doctors, including cardiologists, heart surgeons, heart imaging specialists, cardiac anesthesiologists and advance practice cardiac nurses. Together, we determine the most appropriate EP tests and treatments for people with abnormal heart rhythms.
Ability to treat the whole family
Many arrhythmias are inherited. We partner with the EPs at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital so that we can treat multiple people in one family, including children.
