6 Tips to Lower Risk and Increase Heart Health
There is plenty you can do to take control of your heart health and lower your risk of heart disease. Talk with your provider about what’s right for you and together make a plan for success with any lifestyle changes. In general: | |
1. | Eat a heart healthy diet – fresh fruits and vegetables, low-fat dairy, whole grains, lean meats and plant-based proteins, healthy oils and fats, high-fiber foods |
2. | Know your family’s medical history with heart disease – share the info with your provider |
3. | Get plenty of quality sleep – at least 7 hours a day |
4. | Exercise regularly – at least 150 minutes of aerobic exercise per week |
5. | No smoking – If you currently smoke and need help quitting, ask your provider about cessation programs |
6. | Lower your stress levels – unwind with meditation, deep breathing or even journaling |
