Open-Chest Cardiac Surgery Important Information

Memorial Healthcare System is committed to providing our patients with the information they need to make informed decisions for themselves and their families. In the spirit of this commitment, we wanted to share information from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) regarding a device-related issue that is impacting many hospitals in the United States and Europe.

The CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have notified hospitals about a risk of infection that has been linked to a specific heater-cooler device that is used during open-chest cardiac surgery.  The CDC considers the infection very rare and estimates the risk of infection as less than one percent (1%).

Below are links that provide additional information about this device-related issue.
