Am I Eligible for HIPEC to Treat PSM?
Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is an aggressive treatment option for peritoneal surface malignancy (PSM), also called peritoneal cancer.
It has some risks, so our team only recommends it when it offers the best chance of survival.
Together, we will review your case and recommend a treatment plan based on specific details of the disease and your personal factors. It may or may not involve HIPEC.
No matter what treatment course we recommend, we will spend as much time as necessary with you and your family, to answer all of your questions. We want you to understand the disease, your options and the treatment we suggest.
Is HIPEC (IP Chemotherapy) for Peritoneal Cancer Right for Me?
This treatment is reserved for very complex and advanced types of cancer — HIPEC isn’t for everyone. Therefore, patients with PSM should be assessed by specialists who can recommend the best possible personalized treatments.
In many patients with PSM, the cancer has also spread to other organs. Those patients are treated with traditional intravenous chemotherapy. But if the cancer is limited solely to the primary site of cancer and the peritoneum, you may be a good candidate for HIPEC.
The team at Memorial Healthcare System can help you and your family decide whether HIPEC is a good option for you. At your consultation, a surgical oncologist will evaluate the extent of the peritoneal disease, as well as your:
- Symptoms
- Medical and surgical history
- Allergies and medications
- Family history of cancer
- Lifestyle factors, such as smoking and alcohol consumption
Evaluation by a Panel of Cancer Specialists
After your appointment, a panel of our cancer specialists will review your case. Together, they will formulate an evidence-based, personalized plan for your particular situation. Your evaluation team will include:
- A medical oncologist specializing in treating cancer with drugs.
- A surgical oncologist specializing in treating cancer with surgery.
- A radiation oncologist specializing in treating cancer with radiation.
They will share their evaluation with you and answer any questions. Our goal is to make sure you understand the disease, the recommended treatment plan and the associated risks as you make your decision.
