About Me

I am a trauma, critical care and acute care surgeon at Memorial Healthcare System. I treat patients who are injured, critically ill and those in need of emergency surgery.

My father is a retired trauma and critical care surgeon. Growing up I admired the relationships he formed with his patients and how grateful they were for his help. He still inspires me to this day to put patients first and to address their problems with compassion.

I love surgery because every day is different. Each day I have an opportunity to learn something new and also teach what I have learned through my surgical education and experience. The lessons shared can be applied to improve care for our patients.

I also love being there for the families of my patients, whom I am often meeting under difficult circumstances. Their loved ones come to us hurting, bleeding, and, sometimes, near death. We are privileged with the ability to offer help and compassion. I ensure that each patient is offered the same courtesy, compassion and care that I would ask for my own family.

In addition to providing patient care, I also enjoy teaching surgical skills and mentoring new doctors. I have taught robotic, laparoscopic, endoscopic and open surgical skills to hundreds of students. My YouTube channel is a popular venue for virtual learning of how to suture and tie knots like a surgeon.

When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my wife and children. We love reading books, swimming, playing basketball and spending quality time with our extended family.

Research

My research interests include the impact of public health on injury prevention and trauma systems. My past research has also focused on surgical education and training, and I even patented a surgical training device that is affordable and portable in hopes of teaching advanced surgical skills in areas where resources are limited.
