Medical Director, Outpatient Behavioral Health

Dr. Clara Alvarez Villalba is board-certified in adult psychiatry, addictions and psychosomatic medicine. She earned her medical degree from the Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Senora del Rosario Medical School in Bogota, Colombia in 1994, after which she completed her medical internship at the Fundacion Santa de Bogota Clinic. She completed her psychiatry residency at the Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical College, in 2007. She completed her psychosomatic medicine fellowship at North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in 2008.

As Medical Director of Outpatient Behavioral Health, Dr. Alvarez provides medical oversight and physician coverage for the Outpatient Detoxification program, which serves patients requiring medication-assisted withdrawal assistance for substance dependence. She is responsible for psychiatric evaluation, medication management and the oversight of patients attending the Intensive Outpatient programs, as well as for referrals from Inpatient Behavioral Health, South Broward Community Health Services, the Psychiatric Emergency Assessment Center, emergency departments and the community.

Dr. Alvarez has served as medical director of the Adult Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic at Jackson Memorial Hospital, in collaboration with the Department of Psychiatry and? Behavioral Sciences at the University of Miami, and as assistant professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. She also served as attending ?psychiatrist at the Roosevelt Hospital in New York City and adjuvant lecturer at City College in New York.

Dr. Alvarez’s other areas of interest include mood disorders, women’s health, addiction, psychopharmacology and geriatrics.
