Roberto was suffering from heart failure due to blocked arteries. A heavy smoker, he had already experienced two heart attacks and multiple hospitalizations.
"I was too tired; I couldn't do many things," he said.
At Memorial Cardiac and Vascular Institute, Roberto was treated by Maria Avila, MD, an advanced heart failure and transplant cardiologist, and Memorial's multidisciplinary cardiac team.
"I came here to Memorial and I found a family and I feel everything is becoming better and better, Roberto recalled. "But I needed a heart.
While on a transplant list, a catheter provided continuous medicine infusions, helping his heart contract better.
After waiting more than a year, Roberto had successful heart transplant surgery at Memorial. He continues to make follow-up visits, while planning to increase his activities with his grandchildren.
"I really want to say thank you to Memorial for helping me to stay alive," he said.
