Critical Care Medicine

Rotation: MED 501-1

Length: 4 weeks

Goals:  The ICU rotation is designed to allow maximum time for students at the bedside and to be a functional part of the ICU team. After sign-out rounds you will go round on your patients and review labs/imaging/UO/Drips/Meds/Vent/speak to RN and RT. You will prepare for presentation on multi-dis rounds. During the course of the day, you will be in contact with the Intensivists in the event that there is an interesting case or procedure. You are expected to follow up on labs/imaging/consultations ordered as part of the daily plan on rounds. Students will write daily progress notes on their patients, using the Critical Care template. You will assist with procedures depending on the complexity of the case and the physician that you are working with. Over the course of the 4 weeks you should receive a talk/teaching session from each intensivist. This will take place depending on patient issues for the day. Additional teaching will depend on the cases on the service during the month. The following are examples of topics to be covered by the Intensivists. ABG’s, Shock, Non Invasive Positive pressure ventilation, Mechanical ventilation, Pancreatitis, CVA/ICH, Acute respiratory failure/ARDS, GI Bleed, Acute renal failure, Critical Care ID/antibiotics, Brain death
