Hematology & Medical Oncology Fellowship Educational Experience

In Hematology/Medical Oncology we have 2 specialties:

  • Hematology
  • Medical Oncology

Hematology

There is one (1) outpatient (OP) location and one (1) inpatient (IP) location.

Also referred to as Malignant Hematology and Cellular Therapy (MHCT). There are four (4) physicians actually employees of Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, FL but they are full-time physicians at Memorial Healthcare System Memorial Cancer Institute.

Those 4 physicians are: Drs. Yehuda Deutsch, Hugo Fernandez, Jose Sandoval-Sus, and Fernando Madueno Vargas.

Medical Oncology

There are four (4) OP locations and two (2) IP locations.

OP Locations

  • Memorial Regional Hospital (MRH) East Oncology: Drs. Atif Hussein, Michel Vulfovich, Matthew Salzberg, Brian Hunis, Frederick Wittlin, and Jennifer Zikria.
  • MRH East Breast Cancer Center: Drs. Marcel Blaya and Delia Guaqueta.
  • MHW West Oncology: Drs. Luis Raez, Gelenis Domino, Pablo Ferraro, Anna Abraham, Daren Grosman, Robert Hirsch, and Manuel Martinez-Rio.
  • MHW West Breast Cancer Center: Drs. Aurelio Castrellon, Alejandra Fuentes, and Adriana Milillo Naraine.

IP Locations

  • MRH Floor 8 Central
  • MHW Floor 7 West

Therefore as you can see from above, fellows will have three (3) IP rotations:

  • MHW Floor 3 West (referred to as IP MHCT in the block schedule)
  • MRH Floor 8 Central (referred to as IP O)
  • MHW Floor 7 West (Referred to as IP O)

"O" refers to Oncology: In this IP rotation, in addition to Oncology, there is Hematology but usually benign hematology not malignant hematology. The MHCT physicians see only malignant hematology and not benign hematology. As a result benign hematology patients will be seen by the fellows covering 8 Central at East and 7 West at West.

In addition, many of our doctors specialize in specific cancers whom they see in their OP offices. When on call IP doctors see all types of cancer, but specialize in certain cancer(s) in their offices.

These are the OP Clinics (also referred to as disease-specific clinics).

  • MRH East Breast Cancer Center: Drs. Marcel Blaya and Delia Guaqueta
  • MHW West Breast Cancer Center: Drs. Aurelio Castrellon, Alejandra Fuentes, and Adriana Milillo Naraine
  • MHW Lung/Head and Neck Cancers: Drs. Luis Raez and Gelenis Domingo
  • MHW Gastrointestinal Cancers: Dr. Pablo Ferraro
  • MRH Melanoma/Sarcoma/Brain Cancers: Dr. Atif Hussein

In the morning, the fellows will be either in IP rotations (3 of them, IP MHCT West, IP O East, and IP O West) or in a disease specific clinic (OP East BCC, OP West BCC, OP Lung/Head and Neck cancers, OP West Gastrointestinal Cancers, or OP East Melanoma/Sarcoma/Brain Cancers Clinic) working with different oncologists who specialize in those diseases.

In the afternoon, fellows will be in their own Continuity Clinic (CC) three afternoons a week. The remaining two afternoons of the week they can either stay where they are in the morning or do something else such as research. In their CC, they will see their own patients throughout the 3-year training with a physician supervision. Those are their patients and not the supervising physician’s patients.

Call will be taken at Memorial Hospital West.

PGY-4 Hematology/Oncology fellows will average 14 weekend calls per year and 1-2 weekday calls per week.

Weeknight call starts at 5:00 pm and continues through 8:00 am the following morning. Weekend call starts at 5:00 pm Friday and ends 08:00 am Monday morning.

At 5:00 pm each weekday, the hematology/oncology fellow on the consultation service will contact the fellow covering that night, and sign out appropriately.

At 8:00 am each weekday, the fellow covering overnight/weekend will appropriately sign out to the fellow on the consultation service.
