Spinal Reconstruction and Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS)

Back pain is one of the most common medical complaints afflicting people today. At Memorial Neuroscience Center, patients with back pain are evaluated to determine any underlying neurological or structural causes, and if such causes are found, a personalized treatment plan is created.

In most cases, chronic and acute back problems can be treated non-surgically, but in some situations, one of many different surgical procedures can be of benefit. Memorial Neuroscience Center offers a full range of open spinal reconstruction techniques, as well as minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS).

Spinal Reconstruction

Spinal reconstruction serves the purpose of:

  • Eliminating the compression of neural tissue
  • Stabilizing the spine when the vertebrae become misaligned due to injury or degeneration
  • Correcting spinal deformities such as scoliosis

Patients undergoing spinal reconstruction at Memorial Neuroscience Center have the benefit of comprehensive care from pre- to post-operation. The team includes nurses and physical, speech, and occupational therapists to ease the transition from surgery to recovery.

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (MISS)

MISS is an advanced, highly effective alternative to traditional surgical techniques, and it is available on an outpatient basis at Memorial Neuroscience Center. MISS uses a microsurgical technique and a one-inch incision to focus on the source of back pain and correct the problem. The results of MISS are the same as traditional open surgical procedures, with these additional benefits:

  • Ability to go home the day of surgery
  • Less postoperative pain
  • Faster healing time
  • Less damage to supportive tissues
  • Less potential for future problems since the spine is not weakened

MISS cannot cure all spine problems, but it may be appropriate for:

  • Common spine conditions, such as herniated discs, lumbar stenosis, age-related disc degeneration and misaligned vertebrae
  • Patients eager to return to their normal lives
  • Patients whose age or physical condition may prevent them from undergoing traditional back surgery with optimal results
