Leukemia/Lymphoma and Bone Marrow Transplant Services

Memorial Cancer Institute's Leukemia, Lymphoma & Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program is committed to providing compassionate leading-edge healthcare for patients with blood cancers in South Florida and beyond.

Patients are seen for their initial consultations at the outpatient Cancer Center where specialized treatment rooms and nursing staff are available for managing their unique needs. For those requiring admission to the hospital, a dedicated Hematology/Oncology Unit within Memorial Hospital West with oncology-certified nurses (OCNs) and specially equipped private rooms, has been created.

Flow Cytometry Lab

Blood, marrow and lymph node biopsies must be rapidly and accurately analyzed for the proper diagnosis and treatment. A special technology called Flow Cytometry allows for rapid and accurate analysis of blood cancer cells. Memorial Healthcare System has invested in the development of the only Flow Cytometry Lab in this community. In this lab, testing of samples and diagnosis of blood cancers can be completed in just a few hours to properly guide medical therapy.

Infection Control

The BMT Program has specialized inpatient and outpatient units dedicated to the treatment of this patient population and is equipped with the necessary infection-control procedures and technology, including isolation rooms and HEPA filtration to improve air quality.

Blood Bank

A specialized blood-banking facility supervised by American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) certified staff, ensures necessary blood product support for patients going through chemotherapy and transplant. The BMT Program also works in partnership with the Community Blood Center of South Florida to provide special blood bank services, including tissue HLA typing and cryopreservation of bone marrow samples.

Resource Library

A family resource center/library is located on the inpatient Hematology/Oncology Unit with literature and Internet access.
