Memorial Cancer Institute
Disease-Specific Cancer Treatment Programs
All forms of cancer are diagnosed and treated at Memorial Cancer Institute. However, specific treatment programs in breast cancer treatment, colorectal/gastrointestinal cancer treatment, leukemia/lymphoma treatment and lung cancer treatment have been developed to address the predominant needs in our community. This has enabled us to provide highly specialized treatment programs encompassing diagnostic and genetic analysis, advanced treatments, FDA-approved clinical trials, integrative medicine and support systems and strategies. Each disease-specific program includes well-developed programs of prevention, management of early cancer, treatment of advanced disease, complementary and alternative medicine, palliative and supportive care, and cancer recovery.
Breast Cancer Treatment Program
This program has been designed to help meet the needs of patients diagnosed with breast cancer or at increased risk for the disease. Services include education and prevention, genetic testing and counseling, individualized cancer treatment options, and access to promising therapies through clinical trials.
The dedicated staff includes a pharmacist, nurse practitioner, genetic counselor, oncology-certified nurses and research specialists. Collaboration with on-site breast cancer pathologists, a genetic oncologist, surgeons, radiation oncologists and radiologists helps to provide a thorough and comprehensive approach to each individual case.
Colorectal/Gastroenterology Cancer Treatment Program
With its medical expertise and advanced technology, Memorial Cancer Institute is one of only a few facilities in Broward County providing advanced rectal and esophageal cancer treatment services.
We have one of only a few endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) units in the nation at Memorial Hospital West, which allows physicians to better stage the cancer and provide patients with appropriate gastrointestinal cancer treatments. Additionally, sophisticated diagnosis, treatment and continuing care are available for patients who have gastrointestinal malignancies or a genetic predisposition to the disease.
Leukemia, Lymphoma Treatment and Bone Marrow Transplant Programs
Modeled after the hematologic malignancy programs found in leading university hospitals, these programs provide a multidisciplinary commitment to patients diagnosed with hematologic malignancies and sickle cell disease.
All newly diagnosed cases are reviewed by clinicians, pathologists and radiologists at a dedicated hematology tumor board. A flow cytometry laboratory and specially trained hematopathologist help provide accurate diagnosis and treatment of leukemia and lymphoma. Partnership with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society helps meet the psychosocial and educational needs of patients.
Lung Cancer Treatment Program
The lung cancer treatment program consists of a multidisciplinary team involving thoracic surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, pulmonologists, rehabilitation therapists and those specializing in alternative therapies. Participation in clinical trials of new approaches to early- and late-stage disease offers patients new hope. These trials include national cooperative group research studies in addition to industry-sponsored investigations of new and promising drugs.
Support services for patients and their families include nutritional guidance, educational services, symptom management and coping strategies, and support groups.
