Who May Qualify For Weight-Loss Surgery?
While individual situations may vary, bariatric surgeons use general guidelines to determine who is a candidate for weight-loss surgery.
Criteria include:
- At least 100 pounds overweight
- Age 18 or over
- Body Mass Index (BMI) over 40 or BMI of 35 to 40 with other significant medical conditions
- Failure to lose weight with physician-guided diets and fitness regimens
- Absence of medical problems that might make surgery unsafe
