South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners Elects Officers for 2009-2010 Governor Charlie Crist Reappoints Four Commissioners to New Terms

(Hollywood, Fla.) — The South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners that oversees all actions of Memorial Healthcare System elected its officers at the July board meeting. Kathleen A. Durham was elected Chairman, Sara E. Wolfer, RN, MS, FACHE was elected Vice Chairman and Alfredo Avalos was elected Secretary/Treasurer. The board members serving alongside the officers are Albert C. Jones, Laura R. Miller and Kevin P. Tynan.

Kathleen A. Durham has extensive experience in banking operations, business development and management, having worked for more than 35 years in the banking industry. Durham is Vice President of the Board for the Florida Breast Cancer Coalition Research Foundation and has co-chaired the Relay for Life team. She is member of Soroptimist International of Davie and past president of the Davie/Cooper City Chamber of Commerce. Durham is vice president and market manager in the Davie/Plantation area for Regent Bank.

Sara E. Wolfer, who joined the South Broward Hospital District Board of Commissioners in 2004, has a wide range of experience in healthcare, having worked as a nurse, a professor, and administrator for hospitals and governmental agencies. Wolfer holds a master’s degree in Health Service Management and Policy from The Ohio State University, a bachelor’s degree in nursing from The College of Mount St. Joseph in Ohio and a diploma in nursing from The Good Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing, also in Cincinnati, Ohio. She received the first “Nurse Executive of the Year” Award from the Florida Organization of Nurse Executives in 1986 and was past president and board member of the organization. She has served on advisory committees for the Broward Community College, Sheridan Technical Center and the Broward Partnership for the Homeless. She is a fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.


Alfredo Avalos, a regional investigations aggravated felonies detective, has been with the Broward County Sheriff’s office for the past nine years. While with the county, he also has served as a property crimes detective, a field-training officer and a road patrol deputy. Prior to working for BSO, Avalos spent eleven years with the Florida Highway Patrol, serving in a variety of capacities. He also completed a six-year stretch in the U.S. Navy from 1983 to 1989 -- assigned to the USS Independence and the USS Ponce -- with a specialization in assault boat tactics and beach invasion techniques. Avalos holds a bachelor’s degree in Public Administration from Florida International University, with a minor in Criminal Justice Administration.

Also, Governor Charlie Crist has reappointed the following commissioners to an additional term at the South Broward Hospital District: Kathleen A. Durham, Albert C. Jones, Laura Raybin Miller and Sara E. Wolfer.
