FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

(Hollywood, Fla.) — A contingent of 14 members of the Memorial Regional Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary recently descended on Washington, D.C., to accept special honors—the American Hospital Association’s 2009 Hospital Award for Volunteer Excellence (HAVE). The award recognized the hospital’s outstanding contributions to health care volunteerism through the auxiliary’s Mobile Mammography Services program.

The AHA HAVE Awards Program is in its 26th year and highlights the extraordinary efforts of volunteer programs and the positive impact their contributions have on the patients, hospitals, health systems and the communities they serve.

“We were proud to have our efforts recognized with such a prestigious award,” said David Reinmund, director of Volunteer Services, Memorial Regional Hospital. “Our volunteers donated countless hours of their time to raise funds to purchase the mobile mammography van.” The vehicle was dedicated last Spring in a special ceremony attended by more than 200 volunteers.

Through the van, Memorial Regional Hospital’s Mobile Mammography Services provides comprehensive breast cancer outreach and mammography screening services to the medically underserved and uninsured women in local communities. The van is equipped with full field digital mammography equipment and provides screenings administered by a highly skilled staff. The highest quality of care is provided to all regardless of any socio-cultural barriers.

“With transportation as one of the three main barriers to accessing services, the van allows Memorial to travel to more than 120 sites, screen 2,000 women and raise breast cancer awareness just by its presence,” said Reinmund. Its effectiveness was demonstrated when 280 women were screened in one quarter and 71 were called back for further testing.

He added, “Mobile Mammography Services is a great example of the power of volunteers and the difference they make in so many lives.”
