Memorial Regional Hospital Names Gary S. Allen, MD, FACS, Chief of Adult Cardiac Surgery Program

(Hollywood, Fla.) — Gary S. Allen, M.D., FACS, has been named Chief of the Adult Cardiac Surgery program for Memorial Regional Hospital, one of the six hospitals operating under Memorial Healthcare System, the public, non-profit healthcare provider serving South Broward County.


Before coming to South Florida, Dr. Allen, a board certified cardiothoracic surgeon, was medical director of the Heart Institute as well as director of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Osceola Regional Medical Center. He also chaired the hospital’s Critical Care committee.


Dr. Allen has published extensively in peer reviewed journals in the cardiac surgery field over the past 10 years. He has been an invited lecturer on cardiothoracic surgery at numerous conferences and is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the International Society for Minimally-Invasive Cardiothoracic Surgery and the American Heart Association Council on Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery.


Dr. Allen holds a bachelor’s of science degree in biochemistry from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY, and a medical degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, NY. He completed his general surgery internship and residency at the University of Texas Health Sciences Center in Houston and a fellowship in cardiothoracic surgery at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship under a National Heart Lung and Blood Institute grant on original research with mechanical circulatory support.


Over the past decade, Dr. Allen has been involved in organized medicine, serving as Community Board Chairman for the American Heart Association in Central Florida and as Honorary Chairman of the Physician’s Advisory Board for the state of Florida in 2003. He was presented with the National Leadership Award by the National Republican Congressional Committee in 2003.
