Memorial Hospital Miramar Appoints New Chief of Surgery

(Miramar, Fla.) — Memorial Hospital Miramar, a full-service, acute-care hospital under the umbrella of Memorial Healthcare System, has named Anel Alvarado, M.D. as the new Chief of Surgery.


Aside from tending to his own private practice at the South Broward Surgical Group, Dr. Alvarado will work alongside other physicians who form the Medical Executive Committee of Memorial Hospital Miramar. Dr. Alvarado will be accountable for all clinically related activities and some administrative responsibilities for the Department of Surgery. His term will run through April 2010.


Dr. Alvarado, a native of Panama, is a general surgeon, board certified by the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American Board of Surgery. In 1987, he graduated from the University of Autonomy of Central America in San Jose, Costa Rica. For his residency, he headed to Miami Beach’s Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he worked from June 1992 to July 1997, earning the status of Chief Resident in General Surgery from July 1997 to June 1998.


Dr. Alvarado is affiliated with Memorial Hospital Miramar, Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Hospital Pembroke, all part of the Memorial Healthcare System. Dr. Alvarado is also a member of the Critical Care Committee and the Quality Care and Patient Safety Council Committee at Memorial Hospital Miramar. He also served as Section Chief of General Surgery from May 2003 through April 2007 at Memorial Hospital Pembroke.


Memorial Hospital Miramar is a 178-bed, leading-edge facility, situated on approximately 124 acres in southwestern Broward County. This four-story facility, which opened in March 2005 with Mediterranean architecture-style, offers private patient rooms and a comprehensive array of medical and surgical services. These services include allergy, cardiology, dermatology, emergency (adult and pediatric), endocrinology, gastroenterology, gynecology, infectious disease, nephrology, neurology, obstetrics, otolaryngology, oncology/hematology, oral surgery, orthopedics, pediatrics, perinatology, peripheral vascular surgery, plastic surgery, podiatry, pulmonary medicine, thoracic surgery and urology.
