Extraordinary Care for Young Breast Cancer Survivor
When Kim's mammogram showed what appeared to be a serious tumor, she searched for a doctor and a hospital that could answer all her questions and treat her in a timely fashion. Luckily, the Hollywood wife and mother lived just minutes away from one of the nation's most highly regarded facilities for breast oncology, Memorial Breast Cancer Center at Memorial Regional Hospital.
“The median age for breast cancer diagnosis is 61, but when Kim came to see us, she was only 42 and her cancer had already progressed to stage III,” says Carmen Calfa, MD, an oncologist with Memorial Breast Cancer Centers, which are part of Memorial Cancer Institute. “Knowing that breast cancer tends to be more aggressive in younger patients, we were determined to act quickly in order to give her the best chance for cure.”
Because Memorial uses the same treatment protocols followed by America's best-known cancer centers, Kim received leading-edge care, beginning with chemotherapy and continuing with surgery by Phyllis Neimark, MD, a surgical oncologist on the medical staff of Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Regional Hospital South, Memorial Hospital West, Memorial Hospital Miramar, and Memorial Hospital Pembroke.
Now, through Memorial, Kim is taking part in an ongoing multicenter study coordinated by the Southwest Oncology Group to evaluate promising medications that may keep her cancer in remission longer.
“From start to finish, everything at Memorial ran smoothly,” she says. “With the Memorial team on my side, there was not a doubt in my mind I would have a full recovery.”
Holistic Support for Patients
Memorial Breast Cancer Centers also provide genetic testing, massage, acupuncture, dietary consultations, psychological counseling and more. And at the Image Recovery Center® located on the Memorial Hospital West campus, patients receive skin, hair and nail services to restore their appearance after chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. Certified fitters help patients with mastectomy prostheses and lymphedema garments for a natural, comfortable silhouette.
"Every day is an inspiration, and what I find so amazing is the courage, gratitude and determination of women. With or without hair, they are all beautiful," says Lori Kidd, manager of the Image Recovery Center.
“The people at the Image Recovery Center are so helpful and down to earth,” says Kim. “They are compassionate and knowledgeable about everything you need to look and feel good during and after cancer treatment.”
