Memorial Cancer Institute

Disease Specific Programs:
Leukemia/Lymphoma & Bone Marrow Transplant Program

Memorial Cancer Institute’s Leukemia, Lymphoma & Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program is committed to providing compassionate leading-edge healthcare for patients with blood cancers in South Florida and beyond. Located in the Memorial Hospital West Cancer Center, it provides a wide range of services, including specialized medical care, clinical research and patient education/support groups.

The program is the only comprehensive center for the treatment of blood cancers in Broward and Palm Beach Counties. In the past, area patients who were diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma, often needed to relocate out of the area for treatment at specialized cancer centers around the country.

Now, with the establishment of the Leukemia, Lymphoma & BMT Program at Memorial, South Florida residents have access to the following vital services:

  • Specialized Care
Diagnosis and treatment for cancers of the blood at all stages by physicians with fellowship training at the nation’s finest university cancer centers, including Harvard (Boston, MA), Johns Hopkins (Baltimore, MD), Fred Hutchinson (Seattle, WA) and Mount Sinai (New York, NY).
  • Bone Marrow Transplantation
This specialized procedure is the only potential for cure in some patients with aggressive or relapsed disease.
  • Access to Clinical Trials
Patients who haven’t been helped by standard treatments or bone marrow transplant will now have access to cutting-edge Clinical Trials, including new drugs under development by pharmaceutical companies, and national protocols sponsored by the NCI and pharmaceutical industry.
  • Education and Support
The doctors and staff of the program understand the need for treating the “whole” patient, and offer an array of complementary services for patients and their families, including support groups, social work, psychotherapy, nutritional counseling and massage therapy.

Partnerships

Memorial Cancer Institute is proud to be affiliated with the North Central Cancer Treatment Group (NCCTG) research base at the Mayo Clinic to offer clinical trials and experimental therapies for all major blood cancers currently available at the legendary Rochester, Minnesota-based medical center. Patients can be screened, registered, and receive all treatment locally in South Florida at Memorial Cancer Institute.

The Leukemia, Lymphoma & BMT Program has also partnered with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of South Florida to help raise community awareness and funds for the treatment and research of blood cancer. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society is the nation’s largest not-for-profit organization dedicated to this cause, and co-sponsors patient services at Memorial, including patient support groups and educational lectures. They also provide need-based financial assistance grants to patients undergoing treatment.

Leadership

The Leukemia, Lymphoma & BMT Program was established thanks to a team of visionary doctors who are fellowship-trained in hematology and oncology and have specialized training in blood cancers and bone marrow transplantation.
