Disease-Specific Programs: Colorectal/Gastroenterology Cancer

Memorial Cancer Institute’s Colorectal/Gastrointestinal Cancer Program offers advanced technology in the treatment of colorectal and gastrointestinal cancers. These advances include endoscopic ultrasound delivered with a 360-degree rectal probe to provide a highly accurate evaluation of the digestive tract. Clinical trials ensure that promising new treatments are available to eligible patients. For newly identified high-risk individuals, Genetic Counseling and participation in clinical trials focusing on risk reduction through lifestyle and dietary modifications are offered. A tumor board that includes pathologists, radiologists, gastroenterologists, and surgical, radiation and medical oncology subspecialists supported by a Clinical Research nurse, nutritionist, genetic counselor, social worker and ostomy nurse meets weekly to review new patients prior to making treatment decisions.

Through the Clinical Research Department, the Colorectal/Gastrointestinal Malignancy Program has access to novel drug therapies and compounds that may prove to be beneficial. This approach serves as a model for all of our disease-specific programs, where the currently accepted gold standard of care is available — as well as cutting-edge therapies with the potential for positive clinical results and outcome. In an effort to identify high-risk patients or to detect colorectal/gastrointestinal malignancies at their earliest, most treatable stages, genetic counseling and testing also are provided.
