Recognizing Autism in Children

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services estimated in 2009 that approximately 673,000 children in this country have autism spectrum disorder. Although there's no cure for autism, early intervention and treatment can help kids develop skills and achieve their best potential.

The red flags for autism begin to surface in a child's social development at 9 to 15 months. In recognition of National Autism Month, Judith Aronson-Ramos, MD, Director of the Early Intervention Developmental Program at Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital, discusses the signs and indicators of autism, the issues surrounding vaccinations and the importance of early intervention.
