Weight-Loss Surgery "Saved My Life," says Young Mother
Weight-Loss Surgery Helped Michelle Lose 113 Pounds
April 2007 — When you meet Michelle, 27, the first thing you notice is her broad, vibrant smile. Before, most people only noticed her weight. At 5'3" and 286 pounds, "I got a lot of stares," she says. She tried to hide, but it wasn't easy.
Michelle's morbid obesity had become life-threatening. On numerous occasions at night she would stop breathing for brief periods, her physical activity was limited, she was always tired and in constant pain. Her condition became so critical her doctor warned that if she didn't lose weight, she would not survive. He asked if she had considered the Memorial Comprehensive Weight-Loss Surgery Program.
As a mother to then 1-year-old Julia, who already could outrun her, Michelle determined, "I want to be here for my daughter." Michelle says weight-loss surgery is a difficult decision but after researching the weight-loss surgery program at Memorial, made the choice to have the procedure. "I knew I wanted to do this, for myself and my daughter," she says.
Hard Work Leads to a New Life
Michelle's gastric bypass surgery was performed by Brett Cohen, MD, bariatric specialist and surgeon on the medical staff at Memorial Regional Hospital, Memorial Regional Hospital South, Memorial Hospital Miramar and Memorial Hospital Pembroke.
"Michelle had a laparoscopic gastric bypass, one of the most common weight-loss procedures. Like most patients, she has done exceptionally well, but her success did not come without a lot of hard work," says Dr. Cohen. "Significant life changes have allowed her to have the success that she deserves. We could not be more proud of her."
Following Dr. Cohen's advice, Michelle has lost 113 pounds and is enthusiastic about her new life, restored health and bright future. "I can breathe, I sleep great and all the pain I used to have is gone," she says excitedly. Michelle now refers to Dr. Cohen and his staff as her "second family" because of their support and accessibility. "I love Dr. Cohen. I cannot thank him enough. The surgery saved my life."
