Volunteering Means Helping Others and Helping Yourself

November 2004 — “I read a newspaper article about the widow of a favorite sports league umpire,” says South Florida resident Mike Neer. “She needed help building her house through Habitat for Humanity. All it took was a few e-mails and we had a crew of 10 volunteers lined up to help install the windows and doors and to finish the roof. A few sore muscles and an incredibly rewarding feeling were the payoff. It was awesome to see how excited she and her children were to have a new house.”

The rewards of volunteering are plentiful, and the benefits to the community are limitless. It’s no wonder that Americans volunteer more than people in any other country.

Expanding Your Horizons

“Volunteering presents the opportunity to interact with people you wouldn’t normally even meet,” says Nicole Bernard, Community Volunteer Coordinator at Memorial Healthcare System. “There’s so much to learn from others. Volunteering also opens up your mind to the fact that your actions make a difference. When you realize this, it just makes you want to participate more and more.”

Reaching Out

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the outreach programs Memorial Healthcare System supports through an initiative called “Community First.” Employees and members of the community give thousands of hours to these programs every year, ensuring a level of success that would not be possible without their participation.

In addition, Volunteer Services brings together a diverse group of caring, committed and specially trained volunteers to assist the staff at Memorial Healthcare System. From teenagers to great-grandparents, the volunteers at Memorial Healthcare System are a close-knit group who share one thing in common: the rich reward of helping others.Memorial Healthcare System offers a variety of positions and special projects for anyone interested in volunteering. Some positions require regular hours, while others are flexible enough to accommodate people whose schedules will not allow them to volunteer a set number of hours. Some duties can even be performed by people who have limited mobility or are homebound.
