Memorial Hospital Miramar: "The Hospital of the Future"
March 2005 — When patients enter Memorial Hospital Miramar, they will experience a medical world that is computerized, digitized, wireless and robotic. With this tremendous technology at their fingertips, physicians, nurses and other healthcare providers can provide exceptional patient care.
“Memorial Hospital Miramar has the same medical technology and expertise as those found in top medical research facilities, yet it provides a community, home-like feeling,” says Ken Hetlage, administrator for Memorial Hospital Miramar.
Technology
As a fully integrated, virtually paperless facility, Memorial Hospital Miramar features some of the latest advances to streamline practices, increase efficiency and enhance the healthcare experience of its patients. Each medication is bar-coded and must match a bar-coded patient wristband before it can be administered. Physicians and nurses record and access vital signs, symptoms and other essential medical notes with an online charting system at the patient’s bedside. X-rays, CT scans and MRIs are captured and retrieved in a computerized Picture Archival Communication System (PACS), which doctors can access for diagnosis and treatment, even if they are miles away from the hospital. The adult and children’s Emergency Departments — as well as the entire facility — have a computerized patient tracking system, which helps to expedite care of patients.
This advanced technology puts information in the hands of physicians, nurses and other healthcare providers whenever and wherever it is needed. (Password protections and secure firewalls ensure patient confidentiality.) It also minimizes the storage of bulky films, charts and records.
Finally, Memorial Hospital Miramar is set up for wireless Internet connection, enabling patients and their families to check e-mail and go online while at the hospital.
