Move to the Front of the Class with a Head-to-Toe Checkup

Updated August 2008 — An effective teacher, a safe environment and a hungry mind are all vital for a child to have a successful school year. But don’t forget another important factor: a healthy body. A thorough medical exam can help ensure that your child is physically ready for the demands of study and play.

“Your child doesn’t have to be an athlete to benefit from a back-to-school health screening,” says Kenneth Budowsky, MD, pediatrician on the medical staff at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Memorial Hospital West and Memorial Hospital Miramar. “During an annual physical, we can detect hearing and vision problems, scoliosis, skin conditions, asthma, unusual weight loss or weight gain, and other possible conditions.”

If you do not already have an appointment for a back-to-school health screening for your child, schedule one as soon as possible.

In the days before the check-up, make a list of issues to discuss with the doctor. Also, gather insurance papers, medical records and other information. The day of the appointment, make sure your child has had a bath, and plan to arrive a few minutes early at the doctor’s office to complete required paperwork.

Ready, Set, Go!

The elements of a checkup vary, depending on your child’s age and health. Typically, the exam will begin with weighing and measuring, as well as a check of your child’s breathing, pulse and blood pressure. The doctor will ask if your child has any known problems or has been ill recently. At some visits, immunizations may be given, and hearing and vision tests conducted. An overview of recommended vaccinations is available on the CDC’s Children’s Immunization Schedule.

“In general, we’re just making sure the child is ready to begin school,” says Dr. Budowsky. “Determining that your child is healthy and physically prepared is the first step to a safe, productive school year.”
